on the Old Course at
St. Andrews.
Jim Espie is a past member of Remuera Bowling Club. Now in his mid-90s, he is still playing bowls at his eastern suburb's retirement village. Jim says he first played bowls in the quarantine station in Apia, Samoa during, the polio epidemic in 1948.
Here he is delivering his 'bowl'... a husked coconut! Jim says the shape of the coconut gave the bowl
a natural bias.

Royal Oak Rockets
reign supreme...
Date: 16-18 July 2021
Congratulations to the new National Champ of Champs Men's Triples titleholders from Royal Oak Bowls - Mike Galloway, Martin Dixon
and Gavin Brown. Their consistent form through the season was paying dividends as the Royal Oak Rockets team worked their way through section play. They fended off North Harbour 16-12 in the semi-final to meet the team from Kaikorai, to then take the final 14-10. It was classic teamwork where every member contributed great bowls throughout the match. Gavin Brown was consistent as lead, setting up the team on many of their ends. Both Martin and Mike kept the pressure on the opposing team to come out comfortable winners. It's a great win gents, well done. Our ladies from New Lynn did their best. But
alas, with two wins and two losses, they didn't qualify to post-section. It was a great effort nonetheless.

Royal Oak Bowls and Bridge Park Bowling Club’s BDO, Alastair McKenzie, has been busy organising successful Winter quizzes at both clubs. Royal Oak had an amazing 190 people at their first-ever Quiz Night in mid-June while Bridge Park attracted 60 to the first of a series of six consecutive Quiz Nights last Friday. I’m really pleased‘ said Alastair. ‘The Royal Oak Quiz attracted 80% who’d never been inside the clubhouse before. It gave us a great platform to showcase our facilities and to sell membership opportunities and our venue hire options. And we raised nearly $1,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation.’
At Bridge Park, I worked with the local Business Association that wanted to use the Quiz Series as a Fundraising opportunity. Once again at Bridge Park the Quiz Series has given us a chance to bring people into the club who we’d normally never see and to showcase our terrific location and venue.’ Both events were fantastically successful and are going to be repeated. ‘At Royal Oak, we’re going to make these Quiz Nights quarterly and the Business Association is already talking about another Quiz Night Series at Bridge Park later in the year’ said Alastair. The Quiz providers at both clubs were Believe It or Not.
Many of the clubs run a variety of social and bowls events over the cooler months. To find out what's on click this link to view club
