Financial Aid Deadline Information

If your family has a student in the current 8th grade and you receive financial aid (FA), or if you have a student in any grade and your family does not receive aid but you would like to request it for next year, the due date for submitting your application is Jan. 8th, 2021. If your family is not currently receiving FA and you wish to apply, please also contact Director of Financial Aid Jonathan Hochberg ASAP and notify him of your intent to apply.

The Jan. 8 date is four weeks prior to the general FA application deadline of Feb. 4, 2021, which is for families who already receive Financial Aid and have students in grades 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11. We understand that you will need to do some estimating in order to meet this deadline, and also that your taxes for 2020 will not be completed yet. This is normal. For questions, please contact Jonathan.

Due to the high volume of additional FA provided by the school in response to the impact of COVID-19 on family finances in our community, it is imperative that all requests for FA be received on time. Late requests may not be able to be considered.

Town Hall Meeting with Dr. John B. Lynch

On Jan. 7, we held a Town Hall meeting with Dr. John B. Lynch to fully absorb and understand all the facts, the Governor’s and local health authorities’ latest guidelines, the results of the vaccine thus far, the anticipated post-holiday spike in cases, and other related issues and questions.

In case you missed the meeting, click here to view it.

Inviting Parents and Guardians to Sign Up for Konstella

Konstella is a new digital platform for our parent and guardian community to connect and share information.

All parents and guardians should have received an email from Konstella to join. If you cannot find the email, head to the Konstella website, click "Find Your School" in the top-left corner, and search for The Northwest School.

If you have any questions, you can email nwspga2021@gmail.com.

11th Grade College Night, Jan. 12

We invite all families of 11th grade students to join us for 11th Grade College Night on Jan. 12, at 7:00 pm. A panel of admissions counselors from Chapman University, Occidental College, The University of Washington, and Whitman College will offer advice for the college search and application process, and the college counselors will lay out the plan for individualized support in the months to come. We encourage all 11th grade students and at least one parent/guardian per family to attend.

Upcoming Events for Parents and Guardians

8th Grade Virtual Parent and Guardian Coffee, Jan. 13, 7:00 am

Please join us for a Back to School Boost. This is a good chance to connect with other parents, ask questions, and share any thoughts about the 8th grade.

11th Grade Families Virtual Trivia Night, Jan. 15, 7:00 pm

It’s just like an in-person Trivia Night but played over Zoom. Each family is a team, or adults can play without kids, or kids can play without adults—anything is fine. You can even decide to have more than one team in your family if you want some extra competition. There will be 30 questions across six categories covering every age and taste. See below for the Zoom invite!

Northwest School Library Book Delivery, Week of Jan. 18

New year, new books! Another book delivery is coming your way the week of Jan. 18. Books can be picked up, along with your dinners, at locations across the city. Space is limited on each route, so get your requests in early. Fill out this survey with either specific titles that you’d like (browse the catalog first to see if they are a part of our collection) or tell us a bit about your reading habits so the librarians can pick out books for you based on your preferences.

The survey needs to be completed by Sunday, Jan. 10. You’ll receive an email reminder the day of your pick up. If you have books to return, bag them up and bring them to the bus for drop-off.

Parent and Guardian Training for Youth Suicide, Jan. 23

Please join other Northwest School parents and guardians for a guided conversation about youth suicide prevention on Saturday, Jan. 23, 9:30-11:00 am. We will cover these topics:

  • Learning how to start and sustain conversations with your teen about mental health and suicide awareness.
  • Learning the signs that someone you care about may be struggling with thoughts of suicide, practice and role-play how to ask about suicide, and learn about resources and ways to support someone who may be hurting.
  • Connecting with other parents and guardians to build and strengthen your network of support and prevention.
