Student Council Adopts Roots & Shoots Model for Service Learning Opportunities By: Heather Townsend Academic Coordinator One of the school's new accreditation objectives is to provide more “Service Learning” opportunities for students. During a recent student council meeting, students learned more about Jane Goodall, the woman who spent most of her life’s work studying chimpanzees in the wild. She is also the founder of Roots & Shoots. The purpose of Roots & Shoots is to give children a platform to make a difference in three areas: helping people, animals, and the environment. Student council seemed impressed and excited with the program. They decided to adopt Jane Goodall’s model for their service platform. The students also got straight to work getting recycle boxes ready for classrooms, as well as deciding what other kinds of service we could do in the future. Please watch for upcoming events for Roots & Shoots. If you have any ideas or contacts for things we could get involved in to help people, animals, or the environment, we would love suggestions. Please contact: heather-townsend@atyrau.qsi.org Members of our Secondary Student Counsel hard at work on our school-wide recycling project. OPEN GYMEach Saturday during the year, from 1 PM to 3 PM, our gym is open to your family for your use. Non-QSI families will need to sign a release form before using the facilities.
Full S.T.E.A.M Ahead! a note from our Science Department11 yoc Math students are beginning Algebra. They are taking what has been learned in mathematics so far this year... and, starting with their second Essential Unit, they are learning to think more conceptually. Substituting a letter (variable), for numerical values – students are becoming proficient in writing algebraic expressions. Students learned a bit of history in recognizing Francois Viete (1540-1603) a French lawyer who devoted his spare time to mathematics and introduced the idea of representing unknown quantities with vowels and consonants. For which he is sometimes known as the Father of Algebra. 12/13 yoc Interactive Life Science students have submitted their Lab Reports on the processes involved in osmosis. They seemed, in their teacher’s opinion, to enjoy the laboratory experience. They all followed the specific printed directions as well as those given orally. The results, as seen in their graded papers, reflect students’ understanding of the scientific method and why safety is Job #1. Physical Science – Students are concluding their first Essential Unit presenting scientific data in various forms, e.g. circle and line graphs. They transpose the data either directly from tables to a graph (to show the relationship of the x and y coordinates as either directly proportional or inversely proportional) or calculate to determine the correct portion (degrees) of their circle. During the upcoming week, EO2 begins with atomic structure and the periodic table of elements. The 5-year-old class took a fieldtrip downtown to learn about street signs Do not forget to sign up for Saturday morning soccer lessons! Space is limited!!Please contact Nate Townsend if you have any additional questions. |
