Wimberley Award winners 2017

Ciara Hepburn & Elizabeth Ferris
 

Two University of Dundee students have an extra reason to celebrate graduation after being named Wimberley Award winners 2017. The winners, Elizabeth Ferris from the School of Medicine, and Ciara Hepburn, from the School of Social Sciences, were selected for their most distinguished contribution to University life. It is also the first time in the history of the institution that two students have been named joint winners of the award. Read the full story here.

Honorary Graduates

Honorary Graduates 2017
 

The University celebrated eight remarkable individuals with Honorary Degrees at last week's summer graduation ceremonies. Those honoured including Olympians, humanitarians, filmmakers, artists and human rights workers. 

Actor and science communicator Alan Alda spoke about his career, his life and his involvement in the scientific world. His secret for life is "Adapt, Adjust, Revise".

Local fundraiser and Dundee graduate, David Cunningham, Chief Executive of the Archie Foundation, paid tribute to his own time as a student at the University and how it influenced his career and work with the community.

The Chancellor's Award

The Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching 2016 was awarded to Professor Rami Abboud, School of Medicine, Professor Mary Modeen, School of Art & Design, Professor Colin Reid, School of Social Sciences.

This award aims to acknowledge and reward senior teachers for outstanding achievement in contributions to teaching at the University of Dundee over a significant period of time. Winners have demonstrated effective leadership in teaching and mentorship of new teachers, and have made significant contributions to the development and promotion of excellence in teaching within their respective discipline and/or the wider University.

There were huge cheers for Rami, Mary & Colin at their respective ceremonies.

Dentistry graduates present the Dean with white Gloves.

Dundee Dental Dean Professor Mark Hector, was presented with a pair of white gloves after the graduation ceremony on 21 June by his students. The white gloves are a dental tradition and are awarded when the whole year passes their exams. They will be displayed outside the Dean’s office alongside the final year photograph to celebrate the accomplishment.

This year we asked our student blogger Harry Martin to takeover our Snapchat on the Thursday graduation. He took us on a journey from when he woke up, to getting a haircut, to the ceremony and wrapping things up at the Garden Party. We think he did a brilliant job - take a look (on Box).

Lord Naren Patel, Chancellor

Naren confers the degrees, by "capping" each graduate with the Dundee bonnet. His humour and light hearted approach provide a special touch to all our ceremonies.
