As a child, James was no different to others his age – he dreamed of a job and a family. Sadly, he found himself on a path where he “just wanted to break rules” and ultimately got into serious trouble and received a criminal conviction.  

“There’s a lot of jobs that I was restricted from that I was aiming for in my teen years,” James says. 

“As a little kid I wanted to be a police officer, obviously I can’t do that anymore. I’ve also wanted to be a security guard – I can’t do that anymore.”

Just Transitions – Expanding the conversation: ecological justice series

To minimise the unfairness inherent in climate change, increasing attention is being paid to the idea of a ‘just transition’ – that is, how to move from current untenable economic and social systems to an ecologically sustainable, zero greenhouse gas emissions world in a way that ensures those least able to cope with climate change receive the help they need to successfully adapt.

Jesuit Social Services says that the Victorian Government's decision to retain the Parkville Youth Justice Centre for young women and boys aged 10-14yo is an important step in the right direction. "We know that large-scale detention facilities do not serve the purpose of rehabilitating and re-socialising young people ahead of their return to the community," says our CEO Julie Edwards. Following the dissolution of White Ribbon Australia, Jesuit Social Services’ The Men's Project has joined several other organisations focused on engaging men in prevention, early intervention and support strategies to highlight that Australian men remain crucial partners in nationwide efforts to end violence against women and children. "Working with men is one component of ending violence against women.
