Tower Tower Exhibition

Dates: Wednesday 19 March - Thursday 3 April
Venue: Wunderlich Gallery, 757 Swanston

Ah but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for? -- Robert Browning, Andrea del Sarto, 1855.

The tower is an ever-present and iconic feature of the increasingly urbanised lives of the human race. Its soaring form has captured the human imagination from a symbol of striving idealism to human greed, pomposity, excess and the vapid one liner.

As Melbourne’s skyline reaches ever higher the work showcased in this exhibition, by students of Studio B of the Master of Architecture program, is a timely interrogation of what the tower typology means to this city.

Master of Architecture Studio B -was led by M.Arch Program Coordinator, Peter Raisbeck and tutors, Kirilly Barnett, Madeleine Beech and Ben de Nardi

Free Public Lecture: 'Rules' by Ben Duckworth of HASSELL

Date: 25th March 2014
Time: 18:30-19:30
Venue: Baldwin Spencer Theater, The University of Melbourne.
RSVP: Please book online

Design is not simply a linear process. Its simplistic basis is of course linear, ideas become buildings, however in reality the process is subjugated by a series of expected and unexpected feedback loops. We need to engage with these detours to realise the potential of a project and to do this we need a range of different tools. Computational design (the setting of rules)  is one of these tools. It’s not really about form, it’s about ideas: Realising ideas.

Ben Duckworth is a Principal and Practice Leader at HASSELL.

Stranded Down Under

Are fossil fuels bankrupting Australia financially and ecologically?

As numerous industrialised nations take action to reduce their emissions and shift to a low-carbon energy future, Australia plans to invest over $100billion in new coal mining developments over the next 15 years, including nine mega mines in Queensland’s Galilee Basin and the controversial Maules Creek coal mne in NSW’s Leard State Forest. Whether we like it or not, our savings are being used to fund many of these projects.

Ben Caldecott, founder of Oxford University’s Stranded Assets Programme and author of the groundbreaking report “Stranded Down Under? Environment-related factors changing China’s demand for coal and what this means for Australian coal assets”, sheds light on the ramifications of Australia’s fossil fuel addiction and how we can kick our nation’s dirtiest habit.
