Webversion KOMPETENZ IN PAPIER NewsletterFebruary 2021 From the officeDear members and friends of ZELLCHEMING, Even though the ongoing pandemic still doesn't allow us to maintain our networks in person, the virtual ways help us to exchange ideas. I am delighted to see how the number of subscribers to our Women4Paper content on the social networks LinkedIn and Xing has climbed upward month after month. A year ago, both groups were launched, and soon we will be able to welcome the 200th subscriber, and we are looking forward to it! As the number of women working in the paper and cellulose fiber-based industry still lags significantly behind many other industries, we chalk this up as a great success. Now we would like to take the Women4Paper community to the next level and create an attractive networking opportunity for representatives of our industry. As a first step, I therefore cordially invite you to the first virtual Women4Paper web event: February 8, 2021, from 14:30 to 16:00 CET (GMT +1). Please register for the event by email. We would like to use the opportunity to briefly report on ZELLCHEMING, to get to know the women in our circle better, but also to discuss directly which topics are particularly near to your heart and who of you would like to get more involved in the range of the initiative. Whether the meeting is held in German or English will depend on the needs of the participants. Stay healthy and optimistic, Petra Hanke ZELLCHEMING-Expo 2021 NewsletterRegister now for the regular newsletter with current information on ZELLCHEMING-Expo of ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH. From Society & IndustryNew Cepi study on pulp & paper industry biorefineries in EuropeCepi presented the first Europe-wide study about pulp and paper industry biorefineries with a dedicated webinar attended by close to 100 participants from industry and press. The study carried out by NC Partnering identified 139 biorefineries spread throughout Europe, with the biggest number of them located in Austria, Finland, France, Germany and Sweden. These biorefineries bring to the market new bio-based products for a myriad of industrial value chains such as aviation, civil construction, printing and publishing, packaging, food, automotive & batteries, cosmetics, personal hygiene, electronics, pharmaceuticals & medical applications, furniture, chemicals, textile, and energy. The most common bio-based products are man-made fibres, biodiesel and bio-naphta, lignosulphonate and tall oil products. The purpose of this study is also to identify the value of these emerging bio-based products. The turnover generated is close to €2.7 billion, which corresponds to almost 3% of European pulp and paper industry sector turnover as a whole. Based on investment plans and R&D programs, we expect this share to grow in the future. The pulp & paper industry has the ambition to become the European hub for the bio-based economy, integrating wood fibre, bio-based products and novel recycling. The key will also be to use the entire potential of raw materials and by-streams of the forest-based sector – which also means paper for recycling – for a broad range of high added value bio-based products. “The EU Green Deal and the 2050 climate neutrality target require an ambitious shift in the way we produce and consume in Europe. Bio-based products offer solutions to many value chains, also reinforcing the strategic autonomy of Europe by supporting Made in Europe businesses based on raw materials principally sourced in Europe.” commented Jori Ringman, Cepi Director General. Nestlé shifts Smarties candy, cereal brands from plastic to recyclable paper packagingNestlé announced that its popular Smarties brand is now using recyclable paper packaging for its confectionery products worldwide. This represents a transition of 90% of the Smarties range, as 10% was previously already packed in recyclable paper packaging. Smarties is the first global confectionery brand to switch to recyclable paper packaging, removing approximately 250 million plastic packs sold globally every year.Nestlé began introducing Smarties sharing block packed in recyclable paper in the UK last year. Alexander von Maillot, Global Head of Confectionery at Nestlé, said: "Shifting Smarties packaging to recyclable paper is one of our key sustainable packaging initiatives in the confectionery category. It is a further step in realizing Nestlé's ambition to make all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 and to reduce its use of virgin plastics by one-third in the same period." The new Smarties paper packaging is sourced sustainably and is made of a coated paper, paper labels, or carton board. Information about how to properly dispose of Smarties paper packaging is also included on its labels to raise consumer awareness. Nestlé invested a significant amount in upgrading factories around the world for this project, including in Hamburg, Germany, one of the company's largest sites. New ecosystem launched to support market access for bio-based consumer productsThe packaging, automotive, and other consumer goods industries have received EUR 14.5 million funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program for a project aiming to replace petroleum-based goods with bio-based products. The INN-PRESSME project will function as an ecosystem, involving the development of recyclable and/or biodegradable packaging, energy, and vehicle solutions, and other consumer goods. Coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the project involves 26 other European organizations from nine European countries. The core of the new INN-PRESSME ecosystem (Full name, “Open innovation ecosystem for sustainable plant-based nano-enabled biomaterials deployment for packaging, energy/transport, and consumer goods”) is comprised of pilot devices owned by ten European partners. VTT's own pilot facilities at VTT Bioruukki Pilot Centre can be used to produce bionanomaterials, process biomaterials by chemical means, and apply them. The services of the ecosystem make it possible to develop new products with a high value-added that are recyclable and biodegradable, or solutions that replace oil-based products. The project started on January 1 and will run until January 31, 2025, with the following partners involved:
From the membershipUpdated version: Wastewater of the pulp and paper industryOur long-time member Dr. Christian H. Möbius has published a completely revised and supplemented edition of the book "Wastewater of the Pulp and Paper Industry - Biological Treatment of Wastewater from the Production of Pulp and Paper, Version 5.03".The revised edition is not published in printed form, but is available for free download in PDF format.A warm welcome! We welcome the following new members to the ZELLCHEMING Association:
From the technical committeesActive in times of Corona: the technical committee MicrobiologyOn January 12, 2021, the members of the Technical Committee Microbiology (TC MBIO) met virtually under the direction of the chairwoman Dr. Kerstin Keppler for a video conference on the meeting platform of ZELLCHEMING. This possibility proves itself more and more, it saves not only necessarily the contact in pandemic times, but also time. Thus, the technical committee was completely represented. In the future, ZELLCHEMING would like to transfer knowledge to a greater extent and be perceived in its diverse professional competence and therefore aligns its mission statement, association orientation and events, as well as committee work to this orientation. The members of the TC MBIO meet this development positively, because it represents a high appreciation of their own work and contributes substantially to the creation of a knowledge and contact network. From the ranks of the TC MBIO, the cooperation in the newly founded main committee working groups is aspired. In particular, the topic of communication among the committees is seen as important. The own work was not neglected: Currently, the TC MBIO is completing its work on an overview table "biocidal active substances", which offers the user a general overview of frequently used "preservatives and slimicides" and provides a brief but well-founded overview of possible uses and limits of use. After finishing this work - the information should be available to the members of ZELLCHEMING soon - the choice of a new topic is already well advanced. Internally, 10 topics have been prioritized, dealing with very different microbiological aspects of papermaking. The topics proposed range from pathogenic microorganisms including Legionella in water systems, to a general glossary explaining microbiological terms, to differentiated measurement methodology. The TC MBIO is planning a question campaign among the members of the ZELLCHEMING technical committees and technical subcommittees, because the topic identification should have as broad a decision-making basis as possible from the paper industry. Since interested members are important to the TC MBIO, work will be done in the near future to present the appearance on the ZELLCHEMING homepage. People interested in microbiological topics are always welcome, but in the future more information about the work of the TC MBio, which is intended to arouse curiosity, will be made available.
