So it was me and Mayank Patel - trainees together, friends for a long time, comic book affectionados... the conversation one day turned towards fusing that idea with the work we both do. People with diabetes are being asked to conduct a survey which will help clinicians and policy-makers allocate better health services.

The Diabetes Self-Management survey has been organised online on behalf of the University of Sheffield and has been funded by the Health Foundation.

Innovation in diabetes care was showcased at the sixth annual QiC Diabetes awards.

People working in the diabetes community were praised at the awards ceremony, which took place at Sanofi’s Guildford headquarters on Thursday, October 13.

Increased complications risk for pregnant women with diabetes

Many women with diabetes who become pregnant are at a higher risk of complications because of a lack of preparation, according to a new report.

The National Pregnancy in Diabetes Audit 2015 looked at over 3,000 expectant mothers with the condition.

Comic launched to inspire people with type 1 diabetes

A new comic has been launched by two leading diabetes consultants to "engage and inform" people with type 1 diabetes.

Dr Partha Kar, of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, and Dr Mayank Patel, of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, developed the idea with a group of people with the condition and the help of publishing company Revolve Comics.

NICE issue final appraisal determination for dapagliflozin

The type 2 drug dapagliflozin is set to become more widely available to people in the UK after the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) issued a Final Appraisal Determination (FAD).

The organisation's FAD recommends a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor Forxiga® (dapagliflozin) as part of a triple oral therapy regimen in combination with metformin (MET) and sulfonylurea (SU) for people with type 2. To read more, click here.

Recruits needed for clinical study groups

Healthcare professionals, researchers and people with diabetes who want to influence future research into the condition are being asked to join new Clinical Study Groups.

Developed by Diabetes UK, the aims for the groups are to generate a portfolio of clinical studies where more evidence is clearly needed, and identify the studies that can, and should, be undertaken. To read more, click here.

New injectable therapy techniques to be unveiled

The latest injectable therapy techniques are to be unveiled at the Diabetes Professional Care (DPC) 2016 conference in November, it has been announced.

Isle of Wight prevention drive recognised

The Isle of Wight's NHS Trust has been recognised for helping to curb the type 2 diabetes epidemic.
