Penile Rehab Programs Effective for Men after RARP

Penile rehabilitation programs (PRPs), especially ones that include PDE5Is, can be effective in helping men recover erectile function after bilateral nerve-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP), according to a study published in BJU International in December.

Researchers from the United States and Turkey found that PRPs that incorporated PDE5Is, either alone or with vacuum erection devices (VEDs), were beneficial.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common after prostatectomy.

The researchers examined the preoperative scores on the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) for 203 men, who were divided into three groups based on their degree of ED. The participants then underwent four types of penile rehabilitation programs: PDE5Is only, vacuum erection device only, combined PDE5I and VED therapies, and no therapy.

The programs were deemed successful if the men were able to achieve an erection suitable for intercourse.

Men who had moderate ED before surgery saw a 19% success rate. For men with mild ED preoperatively, the rate was 46%. Men without ED before treatment had a 68% success rate.

The therapy that combined PDE5Is and VEDs had the best overall results.
