Law and Policy Reform

EDO Qld has corresponded with the new state government, seeking to meet and contribute to the reform agenda. We will work hard to push for stronger environmental laws and we are very pleased the ALP has committed to refunding the EDO. We continue to need public support and donations and appreciate your contributions, however large or small.

Meet Qld's new Environment Minister 

This week EDO Qld met with 24 regional, state and national environment groups in a roundtable with the Hon Dr Steven Miles, the new State Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef.

Over 1,000 signatories call for strong environmental laws

It is heart-warming that so many Queenslanders are passionate about strong environmental laws. The pollies responded to our petition calling for seven key changes to environmental laws. Jackie Trad, Deputy Premier of Qld, sent a detailed response of proposed ALP initiatives, which included refunding the EDOs. Read the ALP response.

Open letter calling for accountability and transparency

EDO Qld's Jo Bragg and Sean Ryan were amongst 50 prominent signatories to the open letter calling for politicians to commit to accountability and transparency in Qld. The letter received a remarkable response and generated a great deal of political debate in the lead up to the recent Qld State Election.

March is a busy month for EDO Qld!

  • The Kevin's Corner matter is listed for review in the Qld Land Court on Tuesday 17 March 2015.​
  • The Caley Valley wetlands dumping case is listed for hearing in the Federal Court Monday 16- Tuesday 17 March 2015.
  • The hearing of the mining lease applications and objections for the Carmichael Coal project is listed for five weeks in the Qld Land Court commencing on Monday 30 March 2015.

Volunteers excited to join the EDO Qld team!

March marks the commencement of our Semester-1 Volunteer Program and the start of two ongoing projects with local universities, UQ and QUT.

One incoming volunteer, UQ's Anna Simpson, had this to say: "With the recent change of Government it's a very exciting time to be volunteering at the EDO! I am particularly looking forward to assisting the EDO team in working with the new Government on environmental law and policy reform".

Economists say “green tape” not damaging to the economy

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), one of the world's top research outfits, says environmental policies - often derided as "green tape" - might not cost nearly as much as politicians and business leaders would have you think.
