A benefit and risk tool has been developed for the use of SGLT2 inhibitors following a review of available evidence. The quick reference guide aims to provide clarity regarding common areas of confusion in clinical practice associated with risk of lower limb amputations and bone fractures, late and early use of SGLT2i treatments within the type 2 diabetes pathway and risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). A series of recommendations made following an extensive review of diabetes care have been put forward by a new panel. The seven suggestions aimed at reducing variation in diabetes care and ensuring it is optimised for people with the condition were revealed at the launch of The IDEAL (Insights for Diabetes Excellence, Access and Learning) Group. They were at the heart of a White Paper, published by the multidisciplinary panel of experts in diabetes and aimed at supporting optimisation of glucose monitoring in diabetes by focusing on accuracy and safety. Adding a sulfonylurea to metformin treatment is preferable to switching to sulfonylurea monotherapy, according to a new study. The findings of the trial also suggested that continuing metformin alone and accepting higher HbA1c targets is preferable to switching to sulfonylureas when considering both macrovascular outcomes and hypoglycaemia.
