A Call for Philanthropic Risk Capital for Refugees: Lessons Learned from the Social Entrepreneurship at the Margins Accelerator
by Marie Haller Start-up enterprises often rely on friends and family to get through the seed stage. But when it comes to refugee entrepreneurs, this paradigm is an unlikely option. This common tension surfaced throughout Miller Center's six-month Social Entrepreneurship at the Margins (SEM) program which focused on accelerating organizations led by or serving refugees, migrants, and human trafficking survivors. With eighteen social enterprises graduating from the program last month, the gap between the funding needed by each enterprise to grow its impact and the minimum investment current refugee-focused funders are able to deploy was striking. In her latest blog, Miller Center Program Manager Marie Haller explores why and how the ecosystem must find ways to unlock capital to support refugee entrepreneurs. Read Marie's blog here→.
