My Isolation Diary
From 'The Gilded Age' to the Grammys

By Emily Vogel

Dear Diary,

From “The Gilded Age” and “Bridgerton” to the Oscars and Grammys, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind for period piece lovers and award show fanatics alike. Between Lady Whistledown and Lady Gaga, King Richard and Queen Latifah, society’s royalty has been anxiously awaiting to see who would be cast as the “diamond of the first water” or in other words “the best of the season.” Whether it’s a ball or a brawl -- I mean the Academy Awards -- this year's much anticipated soirees showed no shortage of imported French couture, dramatic endings and suspected opium usage in the bathroom. And what Timothée Chalamet may have lacked in a shirt on the red carpet, Lady Gaga certainly made up for with her affinity towards legendary artists over the age of 75 (see Liza Minnelli and Tony Bennett).

Whether you get your news from TheWrap, Mrs. Astor, Gossip Girl or Lady Whistledown herself, sip on this tea…

While everyone has been obsessing over the debut of Meryl Streep’s daughter Louisa Jacobson in the “The Gilded Age,” we’ve overlooked “Bridgerton’s” blue blood baby. Turns out ‘Prudence Featherington,’ played by Bessie Carter, is the daughter of “Downton Abbey” star Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton aka ‘Queen Elizabeth’ in season 5 of Netflix’s “The Crown.” I guess royalty really does like to keep it in the family.

And for mere mortals -- such as myself -- who were not born into 19th century wealth, I have good news... "The Gilded Age" is looking for Newport locals to work as extras on season 2! Click here to learn more. And scroll down for more exciting "Bridgerton" news!

Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger Navigate Mental Health and Hollywood’s Shady Side in Roku’s ‘Swimming with Sharks’

In our most recent episode of the "UnWrapped" Podcast, Kiernan Shipka ("Sabrina") and Diane Kruger ("The 355") take us behind the scenes of their latest project, “Swimming with Sharks,” which premiered earlier this month at SXSW.

The six-episode Roku Channel series follows Lou (Shipka), a young assistant who turns the tables on an abusive studio-head boss (Kruger), exposing the darker aspects of Hollywood from a female perspective.

    Interview highlights include…

    • Kruger says she’s “definitely met people” who are like her abusive studio boss character
    • Kruger admits that watching Shipka’s character mimic her look and mannerisms was “creepy”
    • Shipka opens up about portraying mental health struggles accurately through her character

Everything We Know About the 'Bridgerton' Prequel Series About Queen Charlotte

Everyone's favorite ever-scheming, snuff-sniffing, pro-love Queen is coming back for more. That's right, "Bridgerton's" Queen Charlotte, based on the real-life wife of King George III, is getting a prequel series of her own.

Per Netflix, “While the series will center on the rise and love life of a young Queen Charlotte, it will also tell the stories of young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury.”

“Bridgerton” executive producer Shonda Rhimes will write the currently untitled series and serve as executive producer alongside Betsy Beers and Tom Verica.

Last week, Netflix announced the cast of the much anticipated untitled series. India Amarteifio (“Line of Duty”) has been cast as the young Queen, Corey Mylchreest (“Sandman”) as young King George Michelle Fairley (from “Gangs of London” and “Game of Thrones”) as Princess Augusta and Arsema Thomas, in her TV debut, will play the young Agatha Danbury.

The cast also includes Sam Clemmett as young Brimsley, the Queen’s loyal (and gossipy) aide in “Bridgerton,” Richard Cunningham as Lord Bute, Tunji Kasim as Adolphus, Rob Maloney as the Royal Doctor, Cyril Nri as Lord Danbury and Hugh Sachs returns to play the “Bridgerton” Brimsley.

    Diagnosis Was "Freeing"

Selena Gomez has spoken at large about navigating her mental health, just a few years ago sharing that she was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Now, she says this diagnosis has helped her be happier than she's ever been.

Along with co-founders Daniella Pierson and her mother, Mandy Teefey, Gomez launched the multimedia mental wellness company Wondermind with the aim of providing free resources that allow anyone to work on their “mental fitness.” Gomez went on Good Morning America to promote the platform, and opened up about her own mental health in the process.

“It was really freeing to have the information [of being diagnosed with bipolar disorder],” Gomez told Good Morning America on April 4. “It made me really happy because I started to have a relationship with myself, and I think that’s the best part. Like, I’ve probably been the happiest I’ve ever been.”

How To Invest Your Money Like A Woman

    (Source: Getty via Forbes.com)

Studies show that women are thinking about and approaching investing their money differently than in the past. Fidelity Investments’ recent 2022 Money Moves Study report shows that women started investing their money a decade earlier than their previous generation.

Forbes recently spoke with Lorna Kapusta, head of women investors and customer engagement at Fidelity Investments, who shared these investing takeaways:

    1. It is never too late to invest: Get your money working harder for you and invest early or start now. Know why you are investing and why it is essential to you.

    2. Start Small: Don’t let smaller sums of money keep you from investing. Every dollar counts, so the earlier you start investing that money, the more money you have that will be working for you.

    3. Commit and stick to it: When you have a goal for your money, it is easier to commit and stick with it. Women over 35 (36 percent of those surveyed) say they waited too long saving for retirement, so when you decide to start investing, regardless of how big or small, stick with it.

House Approves Ruth Bader Ginsburg And Sandra Day O'Connor Statues At U.S. Capitol

The House of Representatives approved legislation last week to build statues honoring the late Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day O’Connor at the U.S. Capitol.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) acknowledged both Ginsburg and O’Connor’s sacrifices and trailblazing efforts on Twitter. “Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day O’Connor opened doors for women at a time when too many insisted on keeping them shut,” Klobuchar tweeted on Tuesday.

By becoming the first two women on the Supreme Court, O’Connor and Ginsburg cleared a path for current Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Amy Coney Barrett and most recently Kentaji Brown Jackson.

O’Connor became the first woman to be nominated to the Supreme Court in 1981 by former President Ronald Reagan, fighting for issues such as abortion rights and gender equality until her retirement in 2006.

Ginsburg soon followed O’Connor and became the first Jewish woman to serve on the court after being appointed by former President Bill Clinton in 1993. Nicknamed the “Notorious R.B.G.” for boldly defending women’s rights and equal pay, she served until her death in September 2020.
