Latest newsAward for outstanding research Prof Murray Norris AM, Deputy Director of Children’s Cancer Institute and Director of the Centre for Childhood Cancer Research UNSW, has won the inaugural Sally Crossing AM Award for an Outstanding Outcome in Cancer Research. Rivkin Center Pilot Study Award Congratulations to A/Prof Caroline Ford, recipient of the 2019 James A Harting Pilot Study Award from the US-based Rivkin Center. Caroline's research study is entitled "Shock and ROR! Inhibiting ovarian cancer metastasis with targeted therapies in an organotypic model of ovarian cancer". UTS joins Franklin Women as Academic Partner UTS is the latest Franklin Women Academic Partner. UTS joins the Cancer Council NSW; Centenary Institute; Garvan Institute; The George Institute; Macquarie University Health; Kolling Institute; Sydney Medical School; Sydney Local Health District and University of New South Wales in partnership with Franklin Women, to support the career progression of their staff and students, as well as collectively investing in a cultural change across the sector. National Kids to Adults Alliance launched The Kids to Adults: Chronic Illness Alliance (K2A Alliance) is an Australian network of researchers, clinicians and advocates with a shared vision: to improve the clinical care and quality of life of children, adolescents and young adults living with a chronic illness or disability. Funding opportunitiesWorld Cancer Research Funding The Worldwide cancer research 2019 grant round is now open for projects that support fundamental or translational research into the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of cancer. Applications are open to all fields of research that draws on epidemiological, behavioural and clinical data to provide a starting point for a new avenue of research. The maximum budget is £250,000 for projects of 12-36 months. Principal investigators can be based at any not-for-profit research institute in the world. Deadline: 3 May 2019 SWSR Small Grant Scheme SWSR is offering up to two $20,000 grants to recognise and nurture collaborative research amongst its members. Cancer CAG Seed Grants Grants of up to $200,000 over 2 years are available to undertake projects that align with the Cancer CAG strategic priorities. Deadline: 2 June 2019 Prostate Cancer Research Program The US Department of Defence PCRP is interested in supporting research that addresses specific gaps in prostate cancer research and clinical care. Deadline: 6 June 2019 (pre application) KCA Early Career Researcher Travel Grants KCA invites applications from early- and mid-career researchers for grants of $3,000 for international travel to attend medical or scientific meetings for the purpose of furthering the researcher’s expertise in the study of child cancer. Deadline: 2 July 2019 Fulbright Scholarship The Australian-American Fulbright Commission offers scholarships to Australian citizens across all career stages. Awardees take part in an academic and cultural exchange, pursuing research or study at a U.S. institution, experiencing life abroad and bringing back their knowledge and experience to share with their communities in Australia. Deadline: 15 July 2019 Frontiers Technology 2019 Seed Funding Scheme This scheme aims to facilitate projects developed by Frontiers Technology Clinical Academic Group members. Funding requests can range from $15,000 to $50,000 for projects of up to 1 year. They may be systematic literature reviews, pilot studies, development of methods, needs analyses, joint writing projects or other projects that align with Frontiers Technology priorities. Applications that include matching cash contributions from one or more collaborating organisations are encouraged. Deadline: 26 July 2019 Awards, training and resourcesSocial media training The Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing CAG are hosting training by Croakey in social media and social journalism in June. These media are increasingly recognised effective channels though which to communicate with research stakeholders and the wider community. Partnerships with projects nearing completion and seeking to enact knowledge translation plans are of particular interest. Sessions could be tailored to support the development of project materials and inspire others. There are three packages to consider:

UTS Postdoctoral scholarships Applications for the the UTS Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (CPDRF) are now open. Fellowships are awarded to outstanding early career researchers who wish to develop their research, teaching and learning, management and communication skills. The scheme includes the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Indigenous Research Fellowship (CPDIRF), aimed at attracting and retaining outstanding Indigenous early career researchers. Deadline: 17 May 2019 (EOI) SPHERE Clinical Trials Steering Committee EOIs are invited from early career researchers to join the SPHERE Clinical Trials Conduct: Consumer, Public & Patient Involvement Steering Committee. The Committee will identify opportunities and make recommendations on strategies for enhanced clinician (including GP), nursing and allied health engagement in clinical trials and improvements to recruitment and retention of participants /patients into clinical trials. Further information is available in the Terms of Reference. EOIs briefly outlining an interest in joining the Steering Committee should be sent to Rowena Tucker. Two ECRs will be selected. Deadline: 17 May 2019 Howard Florey Award The 2019 CSL Florey Medal will be awarded to an Australian biomedical researcher for lifetime career achievements in biomedical science and/or human health advancement for research conducted primarily in Australia. The award also carries a prize of $50,000. Deadline: 28 June 2019 MSD Hubert Stuerzl Memorial Educational Award The Award is open to applications from individuals with a clear interest in the field of Neuro-Oncology and includes:
The award will provide up to $15,000 for the successful recipient to attend attend an international Neuro-Oncology scientific meeting or undertake a Neuro-Oncology Preceptorship during 2019-2020. Deadline: 5 July 2019 Share your SPHERE story Members of Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs) are invited to share stories about their work with(in) SPHERE. Participants will be asked to answer a brief survey. Your contribution may be selected for incorporation into an interactive art installation to be staged at the SPHERE Partnerships for Better Health Symposium in August 2019. Kinghorn Cancer Centre Health 10x – Start-up program UNSW Founders and The George Institute are partnering to deliver ‘Health10x’ – an accelerator program for health start-ups with a product or service addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in underserved markets, particularly in the developing world. Health 10x is currently accepting applications from start-ups with proof of concept or prototype, where at least one co-founder is a UNSW student, staff, alumni, or an affiliate of The George Institute. Fifteen teams will be selected to participate in the Health 10x accelerator which will run June to October 2019.
