1. Swedish Salmonella outbreak sickens mostly children

A national outbreak of Salmonella is being investigated by Swedish officials that has affected a dozen people.

2. Three thousand pigs to be culled in Malaysia following African swine fever discovery

An outbreak of African swine fever in wild boar and backyard pigs in the state of Sabah on Borneo island in mid-February has led to plans to cull 3,000 wild and domestic pigs.

3. A rise in illegal food business investigations recorded by FSAI

Almost 50 unregistered food businesses were investigated by Irish officials in 2020; more than double the figure from 2019.

5. Listeria up in Europe, while other diseases are down in 2019

According to figures from the zoonoses report in Europe, Campylobacter, E. coli and Salmonella infections showed a decline, but Listeria monocytogenes infections increased.

6. Apples and Avocados as a novel risk of Listeria?

Barf Blog reports this week on a study in apple packing houses finding Listeria in the wax apple coatings and equipment for drying and polishing, while another explores the possible role of avocados in historical outbreaks.
