IT'S HOW WE ROLL...

Auckland Centre events

This Sunday is Mother's Day... so we're wishing all mothers a happy and wonderful day... and to tell you this day is for remembering the many great things you do!

The definition of...
nudge

There are various kinds of nudges.  You can nudge kitty.  Or you can give it a bit of a nudge at the bar.  But the best kind of nudges are delicate, soft and not too aggressive.

NEWS FROM THE GREEN...

A first-year bowler's view

Date: 1-2 May
I am a first-year bowler from Howick.  We fronted up at Remuera Bowls on Saturday morning to find our first 1-5 Year Fours game was against Team Akaruru from Royal Oak, great.  14-year old Alex is their lead, he has only been bowling for around three months.  He proceeded to give me a lesson on how to settle down, step up and roll them into the head. We lost!

Next up is Pt Chevalier - how did we get so lucky, first Team Akaruru, now these guys!  We had played Pt Chevalier in the 6s a few weeks earlier, it did not go well for us.  That guy Steve with the green hat destroyed teams on his own.  But we won, how does that work?  Next up is Epsom... they were having a bad hair day. Two wins?  I don’t think so. Tomorrow looks like it's mowing lawns and cleaning the dunny.

It is Sunday morning back at Remuera, we've qualified seventh out of eight.  We are up against Team Akaruru again in the quarter-final.  We won.  I have to send my wife to buy some food.  I do not understand how we got this far, to bring lunch was definitely foolish optimism.  Umpire Amy is running the show, she only gives us 10 minutes to smarten up for the semi-final.

The semi-final is against the other Howick side.  They are far more experienced than us, they are also bigger than I am and I would like to keep my remaining teeth, so I had better not say much.

We are now in the final, up against the other Royal Oak side, a team bristling with reps.  We are still bemused about getting this far as none of us has bowled at Remuera before.  I can see us getting our comeuppance here.  After 14 ends we are only 10-8 down, on paper still in it.  However, up steps Caroline and it is all over - we lose 12-8.

This has been a great weekend... even though the total experience in our team is just six years!

Kohi's keen bunch

Date: 1-2 May
Kohi 1-5's were a keen and avid bunch at the recent Ryman Healthcare
1-5 Year Fours at Remuera Bowls.  Players really appreciated the ongoing support from all club members, especially those who joined the supporting gallery.  Three teams were on the greens and Kohi did take the prize for most supporters on the day! No, they didn’t hire a bus!

Club Captain Margie Sorensen said, “It’s exciting to see so many new and enthusiastic 1-5 Year players keen to be involved in our Auckland events.”

The club is looking forward to welcoming new bowlers and their fans later this month for Kohimarama's Triples and Pairs.

Winning team: James Gavin, Gary Fleming and Murray Dickson

Date: 2 May
The KittyHawks were on the green at Auckland Bowling Club last Sunday.  Eight teams from the Northland Kittyhawks competed with the Auckland Kittyhawks for the Paul Kortegast Memorial Trophy.

It was a great day on the greens with lots of friendly banter saw the spoils go to a local team of James Gavin, Gary Fleming and Murray Dickson.

All proceeds of the day go to charity.

St Heliers Triples at Kohi

Date: 4 May
St Heliers had to play their Open Triples at Kohimarama Bowling Club earlier this week as their 'A' green was getting a new carpet make-over.

16 teams, 12 from St Heliers plus four visiting teams played on Kohi 'B' green, in fine sunny weather.  This green is fast and is an interesting challenge - it's character building for all bowlers!
