The Competition will be screened for the first time in Australia this July, thanks to MSD Alumni, Linus Gruszewski and James Carter who negotiated to bring the film down under.

The Competition is a film directed by Spanish Architect, Angel Borrego Cubero. It presents a raw account of leading architecture practices, Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry and Dominique Perrault, involved in an international design competition for the National Museum of Andorra.

The film will be screened as part of the Open House Melbourne program, in partnership with Melbourne School of Design and ACMI Cinemas. A panel discussion will follow the Saturday night screening, giving the audience an opportunity to delve further into the concept of the architectural design competition and the film itself. The panel will feature Angel Borrego Cubero alonside local experts.

Bookings are essential.

Competing Ideas: Public debate on the role and relevance of Architectural Design Competitions

Date: 6.30pm - 7.30pm, Wednesday 30 July
Venue: Carrillo Gantner Theatre, Sidney Myer Asia Centre
RSVP: Register online

The Melbourne School of Design will present a panel discussion on the role and relevance of architectural design competitions.

Produced as a follow-on event to the Australian premier of the documentary The Competition, this public debate brings together a selection of architects, critics, and academics, to discuss the status of design competitions in Melbourne and within the context of Australia.

Given the immense resources expended on competitions, given the move away from truly “open” competitions, and given the lack of government policy to undertake design competitions for the majority of project commissions, do architectural design competitions remain relevant to architecture, architects and to society as a whole?

The panel of leading industry experts will be moderated by Professor Donald Bates.
