April Newsletter No images? Click here April 2022Hello from the Office of Science Outreach! We had a busy month getting ready for our first on-campus event since the pandemic -- ENVISION: STEM Career Day Supporting Young Women! It went very well, and we are now looking forward to doing more outreach events and our Science-U summer camps! In this issue of our Science Outreach Newsletter we offer the following topics:
Keep scrolling and enjoy! Thank you to all who participated in ENVISION 2022!
USED BOOK SALEMay 14-17The State College Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) supports programs that encourage girls and young women to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. They sponsor ENVISION and provide Science-U scholarships using funds raised solely through their annual book sale! The AAUW Used Book Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day, May 14-17, 2022 at Penn State's Snider Agricultural Arena. Please try to support AAUW by attending the sale or by donating gently used books to their Used Book Workshop (near the University Park Airport) before April 5th. See you at the Game! The Office of Science Outreach is planning to be a part of the Blue-White football celebration this year! We will have a table at the Boardwalk Fan Fest prior to kick-off on Saturday, April 23. If you're going to the game, stop by our table between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to do a fun science activity or just to say hello! We Are! School Field Trips to Penn StateIf school districts are looking to bring students to University Park this spring for educational field trips, there are several options to consider! Field trip coordinators will need to contact the various locations directly to set up convenient times for a visit. Here are a few STEM-related locations that our office suggests:
At this time, the Davey Lab (planetarium shows, rooftop tours) is currently closed until the end of the semester. Contact Eric Feigelson (e5f@psu.edu) to see if it'll be open for your group later in May. The Breazeale Nuclear Reactor is also closed but offering virtual tours upon request. Please remember that schools must follow student-to-chaperone ratios and other guidelines described by Penn State policy. Please let us know if you have any questions. The Arboretum is also a great Penn State location for educational visits, and several programs are available to help everyone discover more about the natural world! Spring Bird Academy
Spread your wings and join Penn State Extension Master Gardeners during Spring Bird Academy! During this program, you’ll be introduced to three bird species that reside in Centre County throughout the year. Find out who flies in a “V” formation, what kind of nest a Red-tailed Hawk needs, and how to make dinner for a Northern Cardinal. Honey Bees in Spring
Hives are bustling as temperatures rise and flowers begin to bloom. Beekeeper Kate Anton and educator Heather Desorcie will lead an exploration of the busy lives of honey bees in springtime in the Pollinator and Bird Garden. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hands-on interaction with a honey bee colony and learn about life inside the hive. In the garden, we will explore the early-blooming flowers that fuel honey bees as they increase the size of their colony. Arboretum Spring Bird Walks
Join accomplished local birders for walks through the Arboretum at the peak of the spring migration season. Four walks are scheduled and begin at the Overlook Pavilion at 8:00 a.m. Please wear sturdy shoes for walking on wet ground and bring a pair of binoculars if you have them. Walks will be cancelled with steady rain. The Arboretum’s bird walks are made possible through the support of the Avian Education Program. Shiitake Log Workshop
Grow your own mushrooms! With the right supplies and information, mushroom cultivation can be simple and fun. Dr. John Pecchia, director of Penn State’s Mushroom Research Center, will introduce us to the basics during this hands-on workshop in the Arboretum. We will meet at the Overlook Pavilion where we will prepare and inoculate our own logs to take home. Following the workshop, we will walk to the nearby world-class Mushroom Research Center facilities for a tour. This workshop is preceded by a free webinar on the science and practice of mushroom cultivation on Thursday, April 7 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Advance registration required. Stories Under the SkyOn the first Friday of each month, join researchers from Penn State’s Department of Anthropology and storytellers from the State College community as they share myths and legends about the stars from diverse cultures under the open sky in the Arboretum. After each night’s story is told, Penn State Department of Astronomy students and researchers will guide us in stargazing, if skies are clear. This program will be held on the Event Lawn and will be cancelled with steady rain or inclement weather. All ages are welcome. Participation is free, no registration required. Dates and times are as follows:
Our colleagues at the Penn State School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) are offering two in-person summer camps for middle and high school students! Registrations are open now and spots are still available! Design your own reality!
