Thank you to all who participated in ENVISION 2022!

  • Thanks to all the volunteers and workshop organizers for their help in sharing hands-on STEM activities with about 85 participants, and to our keynote speakers, Margaret Brown and Ellie Abraham, for their inspiring messages!
  • Thank you to all the families who participated in our first, on-campus event on March 26th! We hope your children came home excited about their possibilities in STEM!
  • We also appreciate the support of our sponsors, the Penn State Eberly College of Science, the National Science Foundation, and AAUW-State College, who helped to provide shirts, souvenir bags, and lunch to those in attendance.
  • Check out some photos from the day!

USED BOOK SALE

May 14-17

The State College Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) supports programs that encourage girls and young women to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. They sponsor ENVISION and provide Science-U scholarships using funds raised solely through their annual book sale!

The AAUW Used Book Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day, May 14-17, 2022 at Penn State's Snider Agricultural Arena. Please try to support AAUW by attending the sale or by donating gently used books to their Used Book Workshop (near the University Park Airport) before April 5th.

School Field Trips to Penn State

If school districts are looking to bring students to University Park this spring for educational field trips, there are several options to consider! Field trip coordinators will need to contact the various locations directly to set up convenient times for a visit. Here are a few STEM-related locations that our office suggests:

  1. Frost Entomological Museum - Opened 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tours are normally self-guided and limited to no more than 25 at a time (small area). For special tours, contact Andrew Deans (ard19@psu.edu) or Heather Hines (hmh19@psu.edu).
  2. Matson Museum of Anthropology -  Opened 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tours are self-guided for the public, but  email matsonmuseum@psu.edu to set up group tours.
  3. EMS Museum and Art Gallery - Usually opened 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. but temporarily closed for now. Renovations should be done by the end of April. Contact Julianne Snider (jxs1030@psu.edu) for more information.

At this time, the Davey Lab (planetarium shows, rooftop tours) is currently closed until the end of the semester. Contact Eric Feigelson (e5f@psu.edu) to see if it'll be open for your group later in May. The Breazeale Nuclear Reactor is also closed but offering virtual tours upon request.

Please remember that schools must follow student-to-chaperone ratios and other guidelines described by Penn State policy. Please let us know if you have any questions.

The Arboretum is also a great Penn State location for educational visits, and several programs are available to help everyone discover more about the natural world!

Spring Bird Academy

  • Mon., April 11
  • 10:00 a.m. to Noon
  • Free, no registration
  • Best for children & families
  • Childhood's Gate Children's Garden in the Arboretum

Spread your wings and join Penn State Extension Master Gardeners during Spring Bird Academy! During this program, you’ll be introduced to three bird species that reside in Centre County throughout the year. Find out who flies in a “V” formation, what kind of nest a Red-tailed Hawk needs, and how to make dinner for a Northern Cardinal.

Honey Bees in Spring

  • Mon., April 18
  • 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Free, registration required
  • For adults (18+) only
  • Pollinator and Bird Garden

Hives are bustling as temperatures rise and flowers begin to bloom. Beekeeper Kate Anton and educator Heather Desorcie will lead an exploration of the busy lives of honey bees in springtime in the Pollinator and Bird Garden. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hands-on interaction with a honey bee colony and learn about life inside the hive. In the garden, we will explore the early-blooming flowers that fuel honey bees as they increase the size of their colony.

We will meet at the Overlook Pavilion where we will prepare and inoculate our own logs to take home. Following the workshop, we will walk to the nearby world-class Mushroom Research Center facilities for a tour.

This workshop is preceded by a free webinar on the science and practice of mushroom cultivation on Thursday, April 7 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Advance registration required.
