Dear members and friends of ZELLCHEMING, After a explicit majority of you had voted for a clear separation between the honorary association life and the economic activities, the reorientation with the establishment of the ZELLCHEMING Service GmbH is now also officially completed! With this important step, the pure business operations will be successively separated from the organizational structure and the "honorary association life" will be strengthened. Behind the scenes, work has already been going on for several weeks to prepare the starting signal for the ZELLCHEMING-Expo in June 2021, which is now organized and handled by the GmbH as organizer. Information material and documents are available, and a few days ago the starting signal for the exhibitor acquisition was given. The Expo website was also switched live for visitors and exhibitors from Germany and abroad. The initial response has been very positive: some exhibitors have already confirmed their participation and the reserved area is already higher than that which was booked for the Expo planned for 2020 in the same period. A further aspect of the spin-off of the economic business activity into the GmbH was the desire to let the association come more into the foreground again. We want to concentrate more on scientific and technical work here and thus sharpen our profile as an important link between research and industry. The steps that could be taken to achieve this in the technical committees and district groups were already discussed in our workshop in January. As soon as concrete ideas are up for discussion we will inform you accordingly! Best wishes and stay healthy! Petra
Hanke From Society & IndustryEPPA warns against new European Commission guidelines on the directive for disposable plasticsThe European Paper Packaging Alliance (EPPA) has warned that new guidelines issued by the European Commission services, which make no distinction between paper and plastic cups, pose a major challenge for recycling and the circular economy. The Commission services are currently consulting with Member States on guidelines for the implementation of the Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD). The draft guidance does not recognize that the thin polymer coatings used to ensure that paper cups hold liquid are a minor component and help to move away from plastic packaging. "Today, paper cups are part of the recycling economy - they are reusable and are recycled and turned into new paper products throughout Europe. EPPA members are committed to working with others in the value chain to increase these recycling rates. This requires that consumers put paper cups in the right containers in each country. It is therefore extremely disappointing that the Commission services' draft guidelines would effectively encourage consumers to put paper cups in the containers intended for plastics. This will not only reduce the recycling of paper cups, but also affect the recycling flows of plastics," commented Antonio D'Amato, EPPA President. Mondi focuses on trials with digital watermarking HolyGrail 2.0 for waste separation for the recycling industry
Stamp-sized watermarks on packaging - not visible to the naked eye - make it possible to effectively sort the material into specific waste streams. Conventional sensor technologies (e.g. near-infrared spectroscopy) are not able to reliably identify multi-material packaging, so they can lead to contamination when recycling mono-materials. With this new technology, it will be possible to separate materials more precisely and generate new waste streams that can then be reused with improved recycling technologies. These digital watermarks offer even more possibilities: For example, consumers can use a smartphone app to find details about packaging and its recycling, and brand owners can also add product details. Mondi intends to conduct large-scale industrial trials with key customers soon. From the membershipA warm welcome! We welcome the following new members to the ZELLCHEMING Association:
Sappi and Rovema complete first project on sustainable barrier packing paper
With the first successfully completed project for a well-known brand manufacturer, which has converted its fully automated production to paper-based, sealable barrier bags, the two companies are concluding their previous development work. This is because, unlike pouches and flat bags made of composite materials, the more sustainable paper-based alternatives must be handled much more carefully in the production process. In automated packaging processes, for example, paper tolerates only low-tension transfer and tears more easily. The perforation resistance of the paper used must also be considered to a much greater extent during filling. Unlike its competitors, Rovema relies on completely servo-motor-driven conveying and sealing technology. Furthermore, all steps from forming to closing the bags are perfectly synchronized down to the smallest detail to minimize the stress on the packaging material. From the technical committeesDue to the COVID-19 restrictions, the Technical Committee for Paperboard Technology (PBTC) held its most recent meeting on October 1, 2020 for the first time as a virtual video conference - organized by the ZELLCHEMING office. The video conference was attended by 16 members of the technical committee and guests. Interesting presentations were given on various topics of digitization, drive technology and fiber technology. Volker Langhammer reported on the work of the Technical Subcommittee Finishing and Processing of Paper and Board (AWPK). Screenshot: Verein ZELLCHEMING Xaver Weig, Chairman of the Technical Committee for Paperboard Technology (PBTC): "We would like to thank the ZELLCHEMING Association very much for its great support! The video conferencing system was tested internally with Ms. Gembus in advance and the good preparation paid off - everything worked smoothly. This shows one of the many ways in which the association with its professional organizational structure can provide support". "The virtual alternative is an important tool to keep the work of the technical committees going in these times. The next meeting is scheduled for the beginning of March 2021 and we hope that we will then be able to hold another face-to-face meeting in a paper mill, as personal contact is an important link in the technical committee". "I am very pleased that we were able to welcome some new and young guests who are interested in working in the technical committee. This is particularly important for us, because only active cooperation maintains the added value of the technical committee". Scholarship Hellmuth-Müller-Clemm-StiftungRosario Othen, ZELLCHEMING student member, is financially supported by the Hellmuth-Müller-Clemm Foundation during his stay abroad. Rosario Othen will begin his master thesis in October at Holmen AB in Iggesund, Sweden. The thesis will be supervised by Dr. Hannes Vomhoff and Professor Samuel Schabel. The thesis focuses on the prediction of board properties and their variability based on raw material and process data. Writing the thesis at Holmen offers Rosario Othen the opportunity to gain experience abroad without having to extend his studies. I hope that my excellent education by the TU Darmstadt in Sweden can be consolidated by the practical relevance. I also hope that the stay in Iggesund will enable me to further improve my knowledge of English and learn a little Swedish," says Rosario Othen.
