FOOD OF FIRE & ICEGame of Thrones-inspired dishes and promotions popped up on several menus this week to celebrate the beginning of the final season. TGI Fridays in the UK is serving a special meat heavy ‘Dragon Slayer Feast’ menu - a Tomahawk Dragon Slayer Steak, Dragon Fire Hot Wings and a Bucket of Beast Bones. Papa John’s highlighted its later opening hours by promoting Late Knight deliveries. In the US, Wendy’s has linked some of its products with Fire and Ice, along with a special delivery promotion to capture all the GOT viewers ordering in. Oreo launched limited-edition GoT cookies featuring 4 embossed cookie designs. Check out Shake Shack’s special GoT menu here >> 2. PIZZA UPS THE CHILLI STAKESPapa John’s has launched a new spicy garlic dip infused with red chillies and jalapenos in time for National Garlic Day (19th April). Meanwhile Domino’s has added a new 3+ Chilli Rating to its menu, which features a limited-edition Tabasco & Cheese Stuffed Crust, as well as Mango Habanero Chicken Wings, coated with a fiery habanero chilli and mango glaze. These have been added to other spicy options including Frank’s RedHot Wings in response to the growing consumer demand for spicier flavours. 3. EATALY HAS REACHED PARISThe Parisian food scene is brimming with Italian eateries and grocery stores, ensuring a warm welcome for Eataly when it opened its doors in the heart of the Marais district last week. The Galeries Lafayette group has an exclusive franchise agreement to operate the Eataly marketplace brand in France. The Paris location offers 7 eateries and 8 market counters including produce stalls in an open-air space. The ground floor grocery aisles contain 100% Italian products, fresh cheese, a butcher and a baker. The new space also provides a cooking school and a vast wine cellar with a range of 1,200 labels from various regions in Italy. Watch a clip from Eataly’s Paris opening here >> 4. DELIVERY SUCCESS STORYSpend on UK food delivery rose by 19% in 2018, according to a report from Cardlytics based on 2.5 million UK consumers (vs 3% rise in the overall dining out sector). Average spend also increased, with older consumers (aged 49-58 - typically parents of Gen Z!) spending £21.95 on average compared to £19.30 by Millennials. The report indicates that QSR chains were among sectors hardest hit by the slowdown in 2018, with spending growth reducing to 1% year-on-year in 2018 (vs 11% increase in 2017), led by under 28s spending their money elsewhere. Another drive comes from consumers looking for healthier, trendier, on-the-go options hence the 5% rise in sales of sandwiches, soups and salads. 5. NETFLIX DOES STREET FOODWith the rise of social media and TV celebrity chefs, consumers increasingly see themselves as experts when it comes to food, particularly when it comes to different cuisines. Tapping into this, Netflix is launching a new Street Food show by the makers of Chef’s Table – watch a clip here >>, featuring a different destination each episode. Thailand features Khun Suthep (hand-pulled BBQ pork noodles) for example and Taiwan shows Li-Hua and Liu-Zhu (chicken rice). Some restauranteurs believe the enthusiasm for food in particular Insta-pics is setting unrealistic expectations of food. Forget not using your phone at the table – Millennial manners means some 47% are texting, tweeting and Instagramming photos while they eat. 6. CAFFÉ NERO’S COFFEE BACONCup of coffee and a bacon sandwich – the perfect partnership. Coffee chain Caffé Nero has now launched an exclusive Nero espresso-infused bacon, which is cured over 20 hours using Caffé Nero’s signature blend of coffee to combine the “chocolate and nutty notes of coffee with the sweet and salty caramel of crispy bacon”. The new and improved bacon has replaced standard bacon across its FTG range - including bacon ciabatta roll, brie & bacon panini, BLT, bacon and chutney flatbread, as well as some new coffee-infused cakes and other menu items. 7. FLEXITARIAN FUTURESTesco has launched a new flexitarian fresh meat range - the 7 ‘Meat & Veg’ products combine either lamb or beef with a vegetable blend last week (promoting more than 30% veg). It includes beef, red pepper & carrot koftas and beef, carrot & onion bolognese meatballs. One selling point is it provides shoppers with one of their five-a-day and takes a stealth health approach to helping “adults and children effortlessly add more vegetables to their diets”. 8. FUTURISTIC FTG EXPERIENCEAvec Box is a new seamless retail concept being trialled in Zurich’s central station by foodservice group Valora. Other Valora food concepts include Brezelkönig, Backwerk, Ditsch, Avec and Caffè Spettacolo. Avec Box offers a range of convenient and fresh foods such as salads, muesli, hot drinks and other on-the-go options. A QR scan code opens the doors for consumers via the Avec app and consumers purchase by scanning and paying through the app. Opening hours are from 4.30am to 1.30 at night. Otherwise unstaffed, during peak hours, on-site staff assist customers and replenish the shelves. This is the concept’s 7th location in Switzerland - click here to find out more about ‘avec box’ >> 9. 7-11 POSSIBLE UK RETURN 7-Eleven recently registered a UK trademark, suggesting the convenience store giant could be returning to the UK some 20 years after leaving. During the 1990s it opened a network of 57 stores before selling them to Budgens for £5.8m in 1998. 7‑Eleven currently has approximately 67,000 stores in over 20 countries, operated through a franchise model. The UK has a pretty saturated convenience channel, but there is room for new entrants. Aldi just launched its Local store format and the Co-op has posted a double-digit rise in annual sales and profits last year.
