Dear Readers,

To better be able to serve you during the summer, we are switching to sending out these newsletters bi-weekly during the summer months. This is the last edition that will be sent out weekly. We will still be bringing you relevant information, but will do so a little less frequently. You can still schedule meetings with us.

Pre-Health Group Advising Sessions

Throughout the fall and spring semesters, our advisers offer a series of prehealth advising sessions. Students considering medical, dental, podiatry, and physician assistant professions must attend a Foundations Session to schedule appointments with the Pre-Health Advising Office.

Upcoming Opportunities with the University of Colorado School of Medicine

University of Colorado School of Medicine Winter 2020-21 Pre-Med/Pre-Health Classes – Join us in either Ithaca (NY) just before Christmas or in Denver (CO) in early January for a week-plus of wilderness medicine, the inside scoop on admissions, and the real deal on health care professions.  Earn Wilderness First Responder, CPR, and Virtual Shadowing certificates.  Classes are taught by School of Medicine faculty and include lectures, labs (suturing, ultrasound, CPR, and/or cardiac dissection), hands-on skills, and one-on-one health care profession advising.  Need-based scholarships (covering 100% of our fees) and optional academic credit are available.  Register by September 30 and get a $150 early bird discount (use code “EarlyBird”).  For more information and a registration link please go to https://www.coloradowm.org/product-category/pre-med/.   Jump start your career in medicine with this unique opportunity!

Virtual Shadowing – After hearing from so many students about their inability to obtain shadowing experience we have developed a new and virtual shadowing series available for free online: https://mailchi.mp/6445e7530d6f/virtualshadowing. Follow our doctors and other health care professions as they assess and evaluate patients’ simulated medical conditions.  Try to make a preliminary diagnosis yourself and learn what the real medical issues are.  Do all five of the sessions and earn a certificate from the University of Colorado School of Medicine (free for those taking our Pre-Med/Pre-Health classes; otherwise a $50 charge for the cert).   Enhance your medical profession progress despite COVID!

Medicine Is My Activism

The Diversity in Medicine Conference, by Patients R Waiting, is designed by experienced health professionals of color with the needs of underrepresented students preparing for careers in medicine and other health professions in mind. The purpose of the conference is to provide underrepresented high school and college students that strive to be health professionals with the expertise of health professionals of color.

The event will bring together a keynote speaker, physicians, medical students, scientists, and other health professionals with vital information, guidance, and inspiration. A full day of both plenary and interactive sessions will take place including a public health panel, medical student panel, pre-med advice sessions, diversity equity and inclusion training for educators, and more.

Naturopathic Approaches to Diabetes

HHD Dean's Lecture Series

September 24, 4:00 p.m.

The first lecture in this installment of the Dean’s Lecture Series: The Impact of Structural Racism and Racial Discrimination on Health, Wellness, and Well-Being will feature a special screening of the documentary film The Skin You're In, followed by a live question and answer session with attendees with the films producer, Thomas LaVeist.

The Skin You're In  explores why Black Americans live sicker and die younger than any other ethnic group in the nation.

Project Horseshoe Farm 

Horseshoe Farm offers an intensive gap year (13 month) Community
Health Leaders Fellowship, which includes housing and an
educational stipend. It is geared toward top recent college
graduates from around the nation interested in community health
and education, non-profit and organizational management,
and community service leadership. The competitive Fellowship is
a unique opportunity for high levels of responsibility and to help
shape community health locally. Its ultimate aim is to prepare
citizen service leaders needed for tomorrow's communities.
In addition to our gap year fellowship, Horseshoe Farm offers internships to undergraduate students (Fall,
Winter, Spring, and Summer) and elective rotations for medical students, medical residents, health
professions students, and other graduate students.
