An increase in health consciousness and weight management has led to an increase in protein intake by 2.2%. We’ve also seen growth in meat snacks – almost 1 in 4 UK adults have consumed meat snacks in the past month (Kerry/Grocer 2017). Many snacks now promote their natural protein claims, like Peperami ‘high in protein’ or Kerry Foods’ GoGo’s Protein Power (soy broad beans, roasted edamame beans, reduced fat cheese bites and chorizo bites). Kerry’s snacking range targets the 27% of consumers who are willing to pay more for snacks that have positive nutritional benefits. 2. BOURBON ON MY MINDBourbon is known as ‘America’s native spirit’ and we’ve noticed its growing presence on US food menus this year – take Arby’s Bourbon BBQ Beef sandwich for example. According to Foodable Labs, brown spirits like bourbon increased in popularity among Millennial drinkers by 37% in 2016. American fast casual chain the Habit Burger Grill has launched a limited time Bourbon Menu, featuring a Bourbon Bacon Burger, Bourbon Bacon Golden Chicken Sandwich and a side of Bourbon BBQ-Spiced Fries. The fast-growing California-based grill with over 200 locations specialises in made-to-order chargrilled burgers and sandwiches, and has seen a rapid growth of 29% in the past 18 months. 3. Check out Lievita’s traditional Neapolitan menu now available in the UK here> The VP of Deliveroo describes this new initiative as “empowering our partners to cross borders and open up in brand new markets”. 4. GAS STATION GOURMETSome new trends and concepts emerging in the convenience store sector were recently showcased at the 2017 National Association of Convenience Stores Show (NACS). These primarily highlighted a greater choice of premium and healthier food to go options to accompany the ongoing demand for indulgent snacks. In a trend also widely seen in Europe, ‘gas station food’ is changing its image - from nitrogen-infused cold-brew coffee, organic kombucha, to apple chardonnay seasoned pork jerky paired with cubes of gouda cheese. DOMINO'S NOW GERMAN MARKET LEADERWith the joint venture acquisition of Hallo Pizza, the largest independent German pizza chain with 170 stores, Domino’s has established itself as the local market leader. This takes its overall store count to about 300-340 stores, vs 209 before the acquisition and a step further towards its goal of having 1,000 stores in Germany. The current Hallo Pizza franchises in Germany will be fully converted to Domino’s by the end of 2018. In other pizza acquisition news, Telepizza has established a joint venture agreement with Forty's Pizza, the leading pizza delivery company in the Czech Republic, opening 10 stores with 25 stores planned overall in the next 3 years. 6. MEN'S HEALTH NEW SOUS VIDE RANGEThe latest Men’s Health range available in Iceland and Morrisons is inspired by health-conscious men who are short on time but keen to maintain a balanced diet and lifestyle. NIGELLA CAUSES PANDAN-MONIUMTrendwatchers are talking about pandan after celebrity chef Nigella Lawson called it the “the new matcha”. Our culinary chef Jordan describes pandan as ‘the vanilla of South East Asia’. It comes from a plant with long slender, spiky, bright green leaves which tastes floral like vanilla but also has tropical coconut and grassy notes. While it is commonly used in desserts such as custards, cakes, & ice-cream, pandan is also widely used in savoury dishes including curries to give a nutty flavour or to infuse fragrant rice dishes, cocktails and even as a wrapping for deep fried chicken in Thailand (gai ob bai toey).
