Cairns sparks up electric car routeAn electric vehicle charging station has been unveiled in Cairns, opening the door to an eco-conscious self-drive tourism market. Deputy Mayor Cr Terry James today joined Minister for Energy, Biofuels and Water Supply Mark Bailey to unveil an electric vehicle charging station at the Southern Esplanade Carpark, near the lagoon. It marks the start of an electric vehicle super highway that will extend to the Gold Coast. The charging station features two different types of chargers, suitable for both older and new model electric vehicles. Normal carpark charges apply, use of the electric chargers is free. Budget puts focus on lifestyleCreating a highly liveable city that is attractive to investors and visitors is the focus of Cairns Regional Council’s 2017-18 Budget, which was released on Monday. CRC’s fifth consecutive balanced budget is accompanied by a below-CPI rates and utility increase and a comprehensive capital works budget worth $169 million. With a focus on lifestyle-enhancing projects, nearly $70 million in being invested in capital projects that contribute to the recreational, sporting and cultural landscape of the region. A general rate and utility costs increase of 1.75 per cent remains lower than CPI, with forecasts suggesting rates will remain at or below CPI for the next decade. Starting with Palm Cove, the first meters will be installed from September. In addition, Council is spending $600,000 in 2017-18 on water-saving programs, including leak detection. More Plans for galleryA master plan for what will become Cairns’ primary gallery precinct will take shape in the coming months. Council has committed $190,000 for initial works and to engage consultants to determine the future use of the former Courthouse Hotel. Some painting and carpet will bring the venue to a condition where it can host small pop-up style events. Read more Community values captured in PlanTo provide a liveable city with opportunities for business growth and which values its natural environment are the core values that will guide Cairns Regional Council across the next five years. The Corporate Plan 2017-2022 provides a framework for all decisions and programs that will be implemented by Council. The Plan drew heavily from the results of the Our Cairns survey, which captured the opinions and priorities of more than 6400 residents, which demonstrated a strong desire to further establish Cairns as a vibrant, liveable city that values its natural environment. Five strategic areas of focus have been identified in the Corporate Plan, relating to Economy, Natural Assets, Liveability, Community and Culture, and Serving the Community. Recognised as one of the world's great ballet companies, the Royal Ballet will present a special Gala Performance at the Munro Martin Parklands on Wednesday 12 July. Featuring an ensemble of dancers from the company, the Gala Performance will feature beautiful solos and duos from the company’s broad repertoire, including Swan Lake, Le Corsaire, Don Quixote and Romeo and Juliet.
