Kennedy Parent's Connect - 23 September 2019 No Images? Click here Dear Parents & Friends, Term 3, Week 9 – can you believe it? We are now on the other side of our biggest event for the P&F – Kennedy Baptist College Community Open Day. The weather was perfect and there was a tremendous turn out throughout the day. Having the starting time at 11.00am certainly made a difference and the atmosphere created by students, teachers and staff was exemplary. I would like to personally thank each and every parent, friend and student who volunteered their time during the day and leading up to it. It is wonderful to know that we can rely on such a supportive community who comes together to help make the event a success. All funds
raised at Open Day go back into the College. The final figure for how much we raised is still being calculated (we have some Silent Auction hampers still to be paid) and I hope to share that with you all soon. All in all it is about creating community and displaying our great College in a positive and caring way. As we head into the school holidays I would like to share a thought with you. I was having a cup of tea with a friend of mine the other day who I haven’t caught up with for a long time. We shared lots of life moments, both joyful and sad and how we each cope with our children’s physical, mental and spiritual needs. It was a beautiful morning to sit and allow my soul to be filled with the words that she shared with me. Little did she know that the words she spoke is just what I needed to hear. I asked her how she coped through a trying time in her life and her reply was “my faith, my trust in Jesus and to have self-care”. Now that may seem simple to many people but to me it struck so deeply because I haven’t even thought about self-care. I already have my faith and trust in Jesus but do I take care of myself mentally? Have I allowed the busyness of life and motherhood to take over my life so much that I have forgotten to care for myself? This conversation opened up a whole load of questions inside of me to which I wasn’t able to answer. Self-care is more than just making sure you are eating well. It is the deeper you that needs some care. My friend’s advice to me was to make a list of all the things I like to do just by myself for myself and choose one of those things to do once a week. When I sat down to actually think about what I enjoy doing, I realised that I used to do all those things – a very long time ago. So I have decided to make some changes – they will be small to start with but hopefully I will have the courage to start saying yes to myself and no to others (something I find very hard to do!). God has promised to help us in all areas of our lives and looking after ourselves is something He wants us to do. He does not want us to be alone in this journey and in Philippians 4:7 it says “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” If we allow God to be the peace in our chaotic lives, He has promised to guard our hearts and minds – how awesome is that! Our mental wellbeing is His concern and we can have beautiful rest in Christ Jesus and enjoy what He has created for us. My prayer for you in these coming school holidays is that you will find a moment for some self-care. Find an hour to do those things you used to do or perhaps have been wanting to do but never have the time to do – even if it is just a walk along the river, reading a book that is not on a screen, baking or even just sitting still under a tree with your eyes closed taking in the sounds of God’s creation. Taking time for yourself is surely good for the soul.
