Tirana International School June 6, 2018 Important Dates June 8 - 3rd Season of Activities End 9 - Yard Sale at TIS 13 - Counselor Coffee - 8:00 am 16 - Graduation 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm 22 - Last Day of School (1/2 Day - students go home at 11:30 am) Director's Desk Dear Parents and Friends of TIS, This week marks the final days of our after school activity program for the year. We are so thankful to the women and men that made these activities special by giving of their time and dedication to their individual activities. TIS believes in the teacher/coach model of activities, during which a school educator takes on the role of club or sport sponsor. This enables our teachers to connect in a different way with students outside of the classroom, strengthening the community. Next year we are excited to expand our program even more by bringing in Mr. Matt Stalker, who will serve in the role of our activity/athletic coordinator. Mr. Stalker has years of international school experience and has been instrumental in creating thriving activity programs in other countries. He will arrive to TIS in August, along with his wife and three children. This Saturday we will host our annual yard sale. It is free to sell, so don't be shy about cleaning out that back closet and selling your gently used items starting at 9 am on Saturday. It is also free for buyers, so you are welcome to come and pick up some great bargains and support families that are downsizing. See you there! Looking Forward, Robert S. Jackson, Director Last week of Activities at Tirana International School Activities 3rd Round: Please be informed that June 8th is the last day for the 3rd round of Activities. Transportation: Starting from June 11 till June 21 all students will be taking the 15:15 bus. In case that you will organize a group activity that will last after 15:15 and you will require the 16:00 bus, you will need to let the front office know in advance so we can arrange this service. Geocaching Last week, students in AP Human Geography took a field trip to the center of Tirana to go geocaching. Geocaching is a sort of scavenger hunt using a GPS enabled device. Geocachers around the world hide small packages in public areas for others to find. Students used a mobile app that facilitates the geocaching process. We hunted for three caches and were successful in finding two. This activity encourages people to engage with their surroundings and to explore new places. Movie Making and Film Editing In 13YO Technology the students have been working with Mr. Panetta and Mrs. Panetta on the selective unit Movie Making and Film Editing. Students are working in groups to create a short video piece. They have come up with a variety of creative ideas and are executing them both in the studio and on location. We can't wait to see what they produce! Visiting the bank The 8 year old class took a tour of Raiffeisen bank to learn more about banking, savings, ATMs and interest - related to their current unit on Workers and Consumers in Communities. The tour of the bank was given by two of our parents here at TIS! The students learned about the history of Raiffeisen, rules and laws related to banking and how loans and savings accounts work. At the end of the presentation the students each received beautiful gold banks to start saving money. Sort, Classify, Organize and Analyze Graphs In mathematics, the Fives have been learning how to sort, classify, organize and analyze graphs from various data. We have made connections to daily life through various interactive videos, and have graphed our favorite pets, favorite books, buttons, gummy bears, caps etc. The students have worked in pairs to tally information and graph it accordingly. The purpose of this unit has been to help students become confident sorting objects by different attributes and identifying the answers after analyzing different kind of data either from bar or picto graphs. Last Unit Intensive English students are very excited about their last unit for this year. They celebrated the occasion with hot chocolate and a good book. IE students will engage in a three-week poetry exploration unit in which they will explore the elements of poetry, write poems using all types of poetry forms, and read poetry with expression. Stone Soup The Ladybugs made real stone soup based on the traditional story called Stone Soup about a traveler who helps a village make soup from only a stone. Every child contributed a vegetable or fruit for our soup. Every child loved the soup because of the special broth made of carrot, apple, spinach, berry juice from the cafeteria! "Tschüs" With the end of the school year being so close, we are gradually saying "Tschüs" to German. So we took our time and started making our "All about Me" posters. Yearbook The yearbook production team this year has been very small, meeting only for short periods after school, which has been a challenge. However, we are happy to announce that the 2017-18 yearbook will soon be on sale. Wait for more details starting next week! |
