African swine fever forces up Europe’s pork prices15.10.2019. Global. African Swine FeverThe Financial Times reports this week that European pig prices have hit a six-year high as demand from China pushes up wholesale prices at a time where European farmers are weary of boosting output due to spread of the virus. Pork prices in Europe have jumped 35% since the start of the year, and this increase has implications for Europe’s largest pork consumers: Spain, Germany and Holland. It had historically been largely confined to wild boar but has been spreading to farmed pigs in recent months. Pork exports to China normally peak at the end of the year but there is a possibility that demand will continue rising this year with Justin Sherrard of Rabobank claiming the end of the year will be the biggest test for European prices.
