As adults we often fall into the trap of talking around or about students, rarely giving learners a chance to explain in their own words what they have mastered. SLCs allow students to do just that. Each conference is led by the student, so that he or she might explain their own strengths, areas of growth and successes so far this year. Homeroom teachers will spend the next several weeks helping students find their own voice as they explain their learning and prepare a presentation for parents. Next week, we will send out a sign up sheet so that parents can schedule a time to visit with their children and teachers for these important conferences. Looking Forward, Robert S. Jackson, Director Springtime in Preschool The Dragonflies are in a spring mood! We are discussing how the weather has changed, that flowers are budding and what plants need in order to thrive. Our morning centers are full of colorful spring-themed activities! Violin News The 11 Years Old violin class has been learning a repertoire with different bow speed, dynamic and rhythm. They can read and write the music notes with increased fluency. Their ability continues to grow each day! Choosing “Just Right” books In the library class, six-year-old students have been learning about fiction and nonfiction books and how to differentiate between them. Also, they were introduced to five finger rule to check if a book is suitable to read on their own. Independent reading time is one of their favorite parts of the class. The Six Year Old Classes had a fabulous field trip to Peza Village last week. Students were able to take a hike with a beautiful view at the end. For Science, they explored the different types for plants and chose one to sketch. They then discussed how engineers could mimic its parts to create a new design (biomimicry). Student enjoyed the weather by playing many outdoor games and enjoying each other’s company. Even the picnic lunch added to a wonderful field trip. In 7 year old technology class the students are introduced to programming with Legos. With the online tutorials to build a Lego piece, they then use block programming to get their creation to move around the room. A fun activity that is a tactile and experiential learning experience for the students. Spanish students worked on City life and Transportation. In the end of this 2 units the class was divided in two teams. Each team designed and build their city with recycled boxes and labeled the buildings in Spanish. They had so much fun using the toy transportation vehicles in their city.
