Welcome Etihad Airways!Etihad Airways will launch daily nonstop service from San Francisco to Abu Dhabi (AUH) starting November 18th. Etihad will operate a three-class Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, leased from their partner Jet Airways, with eight first class, 30 business class and 308 economy class seats. The flight will depart SFO at 8:30 a.m. and arrive in AUH at 12:30 p.m. on the following day. The return flight will depart AUH at 2:15 p.m. and arrive at SFO at 6:30 a.m. “We welcome Etihad Airways to SFO, our international airport,” said San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. The Etihad flight is a valuable bridge linking our two regions and our residents, and we are truly confident in its success.” James Hogan, President and CEO of Etihad Airways, said that given San Francisco’s global prominence as a tourism and business center, he anticipates a strong demand for the flights “not only between San Francisco and Abu Dhabi, but onwards to destinations across our network and the networks of our codeshare partners.” San Francisco becomes Etihad’s sixth U.S. destination, complementing New York, Chicago, Washington, Los Angeles and Dallas (starting December 3rd). SFO Recognized for Protecting Two Endangered Species |
SFO has been recognized with a 2014 Environmental Achievement Award by the Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA). In the Mitigation Award category, SFO was honored for its Recovery Action Plan, which ensures the protection of two endangered species on a 180-acre undeveloped area of the Airport. “As an environmental leader in the aviation industry, we are continually focused on the sensitive use of our land to ensure that protected species can thrive,” said Airport Director John L. Martin. “We are proud to be recognized by the Airports Council International-North America for our mitigation efforts.” SFO’s West of Bayshore property, a 180-acre area of undeveloped land, supports the populations of two federally-protected species: the San Francisco garter snake and the California red-legged frog. The Airport’s Recovery Action Plan, now in its sixth year, is intended to ensure larger populations of the two endangered species through a variety of habitat enhancement actions, while also allowing SFO to improve its flood control, storage, and conveyance infrastructure on the West of Bayshore property. The Legend of China National Aviation CorporationFrom its uncertain beginnings to its remarkable successes as Asia’s first sustained commercial airline, the China National Aviation Corporation (CNAC) blazed a trail unlike any other in the history of commercial air transport. For two decades, CNAC pioneered air operations over much of the world’s most challenging terrain. These included the route system over the Himalaya, an area between India and China known as “the Hump.” Daring to fly at extreme altitudes through all types of harsh weather conditions, the skilled and adventurous pilots of CNAC established an aerial lifeline to China. The company’s achievements occurred in the midst of—and were dramatically influenced by— a period of continuous political upheaval and wartime conditions throughout the region. CNAC’s personnel continuously operated and adapted its air services during civil war, invasion, occupation, world war, and revolution. In opening the skies over China and beyond as a carrier of passengers, airmail, and cargo, CNAC became an important strategic asset during a time of great conflict. The artifacts, documents, and images on exhibition reveal the visionary leadership and the fortitude and resourcefulness of the men and women of CNAC. United in a common cause, they pushed the power of air transport to its very limit in service to others. The Legend of CNAC is on display in the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum & Library, International Terminal Main Hall, A-side until February 6, 2015.
Airport Tenant Gives Back to the CommunityHMSHost, one of SFO’s food service providers, is giving back to local communities and bringing sustainability to another level by donating food to people in need. Twice a week, HMSHost collects excess food from its six SFO locations (Max’s Eatz and Starbucks in Terminal 1; Buena Vista Café, Gordon Biersch and Starbucks in Terminal 3 and the Starbucks in the International Terminal) and donates it to The Latino Commission. This non-profit organization provides residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment for men, women and young women with children in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Tulare Counties. These goods exceed HMSHost’s strict 24-hour shelf life, but are still good for consumption and ideal for donating. In an average week, HMSHost donates 35 sandwiches, 35 salads, 60 pieces of fruit and more than 100 pastries. “I am very proud of my team and all the wonderful people working at The Latino Commission. What we do together really makes a difference in people’s daily lives,” said Matthew Lysaker, Director of Operations for HMSHost. “HMSHost has been a pioneer in our industry by helping those who are less fortunate with our donation programs in communities all across the United States. We have also improved community relations by making lasting relationships with people that go far beyond business. I am extremely proud to work for a company that makes a tangible difference.” For nearly five years, the HMSHost Corporation has donated excess product to local food banks from its operations in 55 airports, 17 motorway travel plazas and 2 malls. HMSHost has partnered with Food Donation Connection and Feeding America to find suitable non-profits in each area. In 2013, HMSHost donated approximately 2.39 million pounds of food to community food banks across the country.
SFO Launches Chinese Language WebsiteSFO launched www.flySFO.cn, the first dedicated Chinese-language airport website in the U.S. featuring content in simplified Chinese. The site provides easy access to the most frequently-used information, real-time flight tracking, and responsive design which scales seamlessly to mobile devices. “San Francisco is a City of innovation, and we are proud to be the first airport in the U.S. to offer a website in Chinese,” said San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. “SFO’s Chinese language website further connects our City with China, strengthens the economic and cultural ties between our two regions, while providing our diverse communities and travelers with an easier way to make our City and SFO their destination of choice.” “SFO serves more destinations to Asia than any other city in the U.S.,” said Airport Director John L. Martin. “This innovation reflects our commitment to our Chinese-speaking customers.” The website features content relevant to Chinese visitors, including information about shopping, restaurants, services, amenities and public transit options. The site also offers real-time tracking of arrivals and departures at SFO, Wi-Fi connection guides, and a social media stream of SFO videos on Youku, a Chinese video hosting service i.youku.com/FlySFO. The flySFO.cn website is hosted in the People's Republic of China, a move which offers increased delivery speed and load times for visitors in China. Travelers at SFO continue to enjoy increasing levels of access to Asian markets. In April 2013, SFO welcomed China Eastern with nonstop service to Shanghai and continuing service to Wuhan. In June 2014, United Airlines launched the first nonstop service from the U.S. to the interior of China, with service to Chengdu.
