Sad news for sports enthusiasts

Since the proposed move of the Safire Berg 100 to 13 June, we have sadly had no choice but to cancel the event until next year as there was no indication of when lockdown restrictions on travel and sport would be lifted. We thank everyone for their understanding. We are not alone in this difficult decision: sporting events across the world have been cancelled or postponed because of the pandemic, sometimes at vast cost.

Proudly South African innovations

Mankind’s resilience is shown by the minds of both young and old, which are focused on tackling future challenges on all fronts. A young PhD student at the University of the Witwatersrand has been working on a self-sanitising surface coating to help control potential infections in hospitals, food processing plants and public transport surfaces. In Cape Town, two South African entrepreneurs have speeded up the coronavirus testing procedure significantly. It usually takes up to three hours to obtain test results, but their groundbreaking kit has reduced it to 65 minutes, limiting reliance on expensive, imported testing kits. There are similar breakthroughs happening across our continent.

We realise that Mother’s Day probably looked a little different during lockdown – with no high teas or trips to the spa! But we hope all our fabulous moms were made to feel special and loved nevertheless.
