DO NOT CALL REGISTER EXTENDED TO
8 YEARS
The Do Not Call Register period has been extended to 8 years, after fierce lobbying from ADMA to resist indefinite extension. ADMA will continue to fight on the issue of extension, but for now is focusing on ineligible business phone numbers and re-allocated residential numbers that remain on the register due to the lack of a cleansing mechanism.

THE PRIVACY TSUNAMI!
After a long summer hiatus, the privacy landscape has exploded with activity in the past couple of weeks. Most concerning of all, the Office of the Information Commissioner and the Attorney-General’s Department have released important guidelines and draft legislation with calls for submissions within very short timeframes. It’s a privacy Tsunami!

WIND OF CHANGE IN PRIVACY LAW
Marketers will soon have to operate under new rules controlling the way we use personal data. Data about online behaviour may be anonymous, but once it’s linked to an individual customer record it becomes personal information. As soon as that happens it is subject to the same laws as the data we normally think of as personal, and this means we need consent to use it for marketing. So organisations will need to ensure they get permission from the outset, if there’s a good chance the data will become 'Personal' at some point in the future.
This is a big process change, but fortunately it won’t come into effect until March 2014. In the meantime though, get up to speed on all aspects of privacy and marketing compliance with our 1 day short course.

MARKETER'S GUIDE TO MOBILE PRIVACY
Q&A WITH DAVID SIMON, HEAD OF POLICY & REGULATORY AFFAIRS, ADMA
David discusses the Government’s consultation draft of the Mobile privacy – better practice guide for mobile app developers (the “Mobile Privacy Guide”).
The Mobile Privacy Guide is a document that tells app developers how to create apps that are more privacy oriented. It outlines how the Privacy Act may apply to the collection of data through apps, and promotes enhanced privacy as a competitive advantage for app developers. The guide details how app developers must manage data collection and privacy practices. It encourages greater transparency about data collection, mainly through up-front notification and user choice.
