Welcome

Welcome to our new subscribers and thank you for your ongoing interest in The Precinct project.

The big news this newsletter is the approval of the Planning Application to build a performing arts facility at the current Civic Theatre site.

And speaking of the Civic Theatre, more than 1,000 residents took the chance to have a look around the theatre before it was closed last month.

Planning application approved

Last Wednesday (10 February) Council's Planning and Economic Committee approved the Development Application (DA) for the Cairns Performing Arts Centre to be built on the site of the Civic Theatre.

Eight submissions were received and considered in terms of the relevant planning and development frameworks and statutory requirements.

Council has determined the DA complies with planning requirements and reflects the intentions of the draft Planning Scheme, which is due to be adopted in the near future.

The application details plans for a performing arts complex comprising a 941-seat main theatre, 400-seat studio theatre, fly tower, dressing rooms, foyer, bar and amenities. The plan includes provision for 158 on-site car parking spaces.

Behind the scenes

We threw open the doors of the Civic Theatre on 30 January to give residents a chance to say "good bye" to the facility which has served the community for 40+ years.

For most of the 1,000 visitors, it was the first time they had a glimpse at the behind-the-scenes workings of the theatre and its limitations.

A big thanks to the cast of Phantom of the Opera and the Cairns Choral Society for your efforts to make the event a success.

And a nod to our front-of-house staff who shared their 30-plus-years of Civic Theatre stories.

Council has started decommissioning the building, however no significant works will be undertaken until after the 19 March Local Government election.

Works underway

Work continues at full steam in Munro Martin Parklands. Over the next few weeks  works will focus on:

  • Building gabion baskets to form the retaining wall  along Sheridan Street
  • Installing the last of the pergola frames
  • Installing electrical conduits and pits
  • Continuing work on the concrete terrace walls
  • Starting work on water main and irrigation works

Other works

There are two other construction projects ongoing near The Precinct area. So to provide a heads-up:

  • Council is upgrading sewer infrastructure on Grafton Street. To facilitate the works there will be some temporary car parking loss and changes to pedestrian access. Works will be in three stages with a maximum of 18 car parks affected at any one time.
  • Ergon is continuing works on Grafton Street adjacent to the Cairns Civic Theatre. Pedestrian traffic may be affected.
