Annual Appeal

The Monsignor Keene Activities Building has been a hub of activity in the life of the school, parish and East End community since 1958. This year’s annual fund will assist with the important and long overdue need for ventilation upgrades and improvements for the future.

Current students and alumni have been able to use the facility to learn sports skills, including tennis, basketball and volleyball through clinics and in team practice. Sacred Heart home games have been and continue to be played there, and many a Diocesan championship was celebrated on this attractive home court. Student Council activities, middle school dances, pep rallies, Scout meetings, the After-School Program, the adult bowling league, and the SH parish Women’s Guild have all benefited from the community spaces.

The Annual Fund for Sacred Heart Elementary School provides an opportunity for you to give back today and help support the project of the much needed Ventilation Upgrades and Improvements.  Be sure to read more about the Annual Fund in the attractive appeal brochure being mailed to alumni and sent to school families via the Family Envelope.

Terra Nova tests begin April 4

Terra Nova Standardized Testing for children in Grades K-8 will take place on April 4 through April 12. Please make every effort to avoid doctor appointments and family trips during this testing week.

Make sure your children get a good night’s sleep and eat breakfast every morning. We put no pressure on the children but encourage them to do the best they can do. All of these things combined will be sufficient to ensure a positive testing experience.

Notes from the Office

Final Scrip Report
Your final report for the 2015-2016 school year will be distributed with your child’s report card on Monday, April 4th. Call immediately if you notice any errors or have any questions.  Congratulations to the nearly twenty families  who surpassed the $400 assessment goal, and to all the other families who successfully earned a portion of the assessment fee.  All balances are now due to the school office.  There are no scrip orders during April.

Parent Lunch Program
The school year is coming to an end soon.  If you have not met your obligation of serving six times as a lunch parent monitor, notify the office of any dates you can serve. It’s not too late to help and to fulfill your family parent lunch requirement.  We always prefer to have a parent here to help than to collect a fee.

Also, we are in need of parents who can commit to extra Tuesdays, with the understanding that it would be as recess monitor. This would help us maintain consistency with supervision on the playground as we move into the warm weather months. Let the school office know if/when you can come.

SHES Summer Camps
A flier for summer camp at Sacred Heart is in this month’s envelope.  Two camps are available.  “Creative Kids” focuses on students entering grades K through two next year.  “Adventure Days” is geared to students entering grades three through five.  Camps run for one or two weeks from June 7 through June 17.  Take a look and consider having your child kick off their summer here at Sacred Heart School. Friends and fun await!

Scrap Paper Needed
Help the school by sending in any reusable one-sided scrap paper. We have been using more paper than usual due to textbook purchase problems. Thank you in advance for your help!

Street Cleaning
Be alert to street cleaning signs on neighborhood streets.  Street cleaning begins on April 1st on Walnut Street.

International Connections social a success

About 50 people attended the Bowling and Potluck Social hosted by International Connections.  It was a huge hit!

Everyone enjoyed delicious food from around the world and  competed in an international quiz while they ate. Families worked together to answer questions like "What country has the longest coastline in the world?"

After lunch, it was time for bowling. All in attendance had a great time bowling.  A big thank you to the older students for helping out with the pin setting.

It was a wonderful time. Hope to see everyone again at the next event this spring!

Uniform Exchange

This time of year, many of us notice that our children’s pants are a little (or a lot!) shorter. Since we’re so close to the end of the school year, it doesn’t make sense to pay full price for new items when there are so many to choose from in our uniform exchange. It’s a great resource for Sacred Heart families. Located in the snack bar area of the cafeteria, it is chock full of jumpers, skirts, shirts, blouses, polo shirts and pants and shorts.

And with prices ranging from $1 to $3, you can’t go wrong. There is a sign in the room listing prices and an envelope system for payment. Simply pick out what you want, put your payment in the envelope and drop it off at the office.

Remember when you stop to browse, you can also drop off any uniforms that may not fit your child anymore. Please be sure that they are clean and in good condition with no tears or stains.

Finally, we’re always in need of pants’ hangers (metal or plastic with two clips), so if you have any you can spare, please send them to the school office. And we always appreciate help keeping the room organized, so consider staying an extra 15 minutes at the end of a lunch duty shift and hanging some pants or shirts.

Volleyball open gyms

Volleyball open gyms will start in April.

JV open gyms will begin on Wednesday, April 6 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the gym for girls in 4th and 5th grade.

7th and 8th grade recognition banquet

Please save the date for  the 7th and 8th Grade Sports Recognition Banquet.  This year the banquet will be held on Thursday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.  Be on the lookout for invitations which will be sent home with student athletes soon.  The RSVP deadline for the banquet is April 15th.  If you need any additional information, please contact Amy Volpe at amy.volpe@bnymellon.com.

Jump Start basketball invitational benefit

Sacred Heart is hosting an Invitational Benefit for Mike Welsh and his family on Saturday, April 2nd from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Sacred Heart will donate all admissions, concessions, 50/50 and auction items proceeds as well as collect donations for the Welsh family.

Mike Welsh, Muggsy, is the Jump Start League director and head referee.  He has been dedicating himself to the boys and girls in the Diocese for over a decade, helping all to play in a "Christ-like manner."  He has worked tirelessly behind the scenes for all of the children.  Muggsy had a terrible accident shortly before the Jump Start tournament.

Sacred Heart wants to show Muggsy and his family how much he is appreciated.  Please consider making a basket for auction or contributing towards a basket.  Contact Julie Evans at juliee@paar.net with questions about making basket donations.  Donated items may be sent into the school marked Attention Invitational Benefit. Thanks for your help!

April food: peanut butter

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect peanut butter to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
