Honorary Degrees - have your say

Every year during Summer and Winter Graduations the University awards a small number of Honorary Degrees to individuals who have made an outstanding achievement or contribution within their field, and who have a link in someway to the City of Dundee or the University of Dundee.

If there's someone you have in mind, just complete a short online form telling us briefly why you think they deserve this high level of recognition from the University, and what you think the relationship may bring to us.

Have you got the bottle?

We're the first University in Scotland to join the “Have You Got The Bottle?” campaign to introduce a deposit return system for single-use cans and bottles.

Previously part of Zero Waste Scotland's 'Reverse Vending trial' in 2012-13, where we introduced reverse vending machines on our campus, a survey of our students during the trial showed that over 70% of those respondents who had used the machines were encouraged to recycle more.

We think people deserve the opportunity to be rewarded for recycling more through a national deposit return system. Find out more.

Tay Bridge 50th anniversary

Gair Dunlop, Lecturer in the School of Art & Design, has brought together work from local artists and writers for a publication marking the Tay Road Bridge’s upcoming 50th anniversary.

‘Take me to the Bridge!’ is a 24-page artists’ newspaper enabling members of Dundee and Fife’s creative community, including several writers and artists from the University, to explore what the bridge means to them and the region.

Contents include Eddie Summerton’s investigation of rumours of royal skulduggery, Janice Aitken speculating that a well-known Japanese monster is the true force behind the Waterfront development, and Deirdre Robertson recalling the legendary Lemon Tree at the Bridge access.

Viral news story for the School of Medicine

A new study led by Sami Shimi, Clinical Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine, has revealed that women who have their appendix or tonsils removed when they are young are more likely to get pregnant, and do so sooner, than the rest of the population. The news was featured worldwide in publications including the BBC, The Independent, The Telegraph, CNN and New York Post, among others.

Tayside Biorepository awarded accreditation

The University and NHS Tayside have been awarded accreditation following the successful review of Tayside Biorepository (TBR) by Health Improvement Scotland. Tayside Biorepository (TBR) is an established bio-resource that stores and makes available a large variety of matched normal and diseased tissues.

The staff of TBR (pictured) are responsible for ensuring that the necessary steps which are reviewed by Health Improvement Scotland are put in place in order to provide an efficient system for applicants to request tissue samples, but also to support clinical teams to provide a resource of human tissue from NHS patients for medical research. The accreditation status, awarded for the period of August 2016-August 2019, demonstrates the efficient and robust guidelines and protocols adopted by the biorepository in areas of patient care and consent, tissue governance, security and quality of tissue samples. It allows Tayside Biorepository to operate as part of the Scottish Biorepository Network (SBRN).

EU Research - sign the petition

UK access to EU R&D programmes stimulates billions of investment and gives the UK access to skills and technologies that it does not have. Ending access to these programmes will weaken our economy which depends on exploitation of innovative science and technology. Sign the petition.
