Dexamethasone guideline published by COVID-19 group

Guidance aiming to ensure all inpatients on dexamethasone receive appropriate glucose surveillance and appropriate managements of hyperglycaemia has been released.

It is the latest instalment from the National Inpatient Diabetes COVID-19 Response Group, set up during the coronavirus crisis and chaired by Professor Gerry Rayman MBE.

According to studies, dexamethasone reduces mortality in people with COVID-19 who require ventilation or oxygen therapy, but the use of steroids can result in significant hyperglycaemia in people with diabetes and new onset diabetes in those previously undiagnosed.

Roche Diabetes Care Trainers, looking for new ways to work with people with diabetes under current circumstances, have made a transition to using video conferencing tools to remotely help those who are beginning pump therapy. 

Trainers in this role usually show patients and healthcare professionals how to use diabetes pumps and devices in a face to face setting, however, during lockdown, this usual route has proven difficult.

Preparing for autumn survey 

The Diabetes Times has launched a survey to gauge views as the diabetes community prepares for life post coronavirus.

DAPA-HF lead researcher discusses his trial findings

Professor Kamlesh Khunti

Professor Kamlesh Khunti is a pioneer in type 2 diabetes research and is ranked third among the top 10 of the world’s leading experts into the condition. 

A co-founder of the Leicester Diabetes Centre and Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester, he also tops the UK list of diabetes experts.

He is also Director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in Applied Research Collaborations (ARC) East Midlands and is a Trustee of the South Asian Health Foundation (SAHF).

 Libre halves risk of DKA-related admissions

Using a FreeStyle Libre halves the risk of being admitted to hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), according to researchers.

More than 74,000 people took part in the RELIEF study, of which 33,000 had type 1 diabetes and the rest had type 2. To read more, click here.

Libre reduces type 2 diabetes HbA1c levels

Newly published research has shown the FreeStyle Libre reduces HbA1c levels for people with type 2 diabetes on either long-acting insulin or non-insulin therapy.
