Annually Monday 8 March marks International Women's Day. This is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. New Zealand has produced several outstanding women bowlers so International Women's Day gives us an ideal opportunity to acknowledge all of our women bowlers and their contribution to the sport.
Two inspirational women bowlers...
Millie Khan was known as the 'Queen of the Green'. Millie won 12 national titles, she also won two Commonwealth Games medals – a silver medal at the 1990 games and a bronze at the 1998 games.
Millie was the first of a family dynasty of champion women bowlers. Two of her daughters, Jan and Marina were NZ representatives. She was also a strong advocate of women’s composite teams being able to play at the national championships, as men had been able to do. In the 1990 Queen's Birthday Honours, Millie was appointed an MBE (Member of the Order of British Empire) for services to bowls. In 2013, she was an inaugural inductee into the Bowls New Zealand Hall of Fame.

She closed her illustrious career with a record 646 caps for the Blackjacks, two world championships, three Commonwealth Games triumphs and an unprecedented six World Cup singles crowns since making her debut in 2001. In 2014 Jo was appointed an MBE for services to bowls.
