CERA Seeks New Mentor Director 

The CAFM Educational Research Alliance (CERA) is now accepting applications for a mentor director. This is a 2-year position with an option for an additional 2-year extension.

STFM Forms URM Oversight Committee  

A new committee, supported by the STFM Foundation, has been convened to guide the progress of the Underrepresented in Medicine Initiative work. The URM Initiative is developing, disseminating, and executing strategies to increase the diversity of family medicine educators and promote health equity.

New Task Force to Advocate for Protected Time for Teaching and Administration

Nine STFM members have been appointed to a new task force to develop national guidelines that define the amount of time needed by faculty to meet the non-clinical requirements of residency programs.

The development of the new task force is in response to a national trend toward maximizing clinical productivity of faculty, which reduces the amount of time available to teach and meet administrative responsibilities and accreditation requirements.

ACGME Releases New Milestones for Family Medicine Residencies

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has released new Family Medicine Milestones that go into effect in July 2020, with the first reporting due in the winter of the 2020-2021 academic year. Milestones are targets for resident performance on each of the ACGME Competencies and sub-competencies.

Longtime STFM Member Passed Away

Dr. Joel Merenstein passed away on Friday, September 29. Dr. Merenstein was an STFM member for more than 20 years. 

A Collaborative Approach to Family Planning Education in a Rural Family Medicine Residency

ACGME requires that “(FM) Residents must have at least 100 hours (or one month) or 125 patient encounters dedicated to the care of women with gynecologic issues, including well-woman care, family planning, contraception, and options counseling for unintended pregnancy.” Read the results of one residency's pilot program that used Reproductive Health Education in Family Medicine (RHEDI) funding to develop an abortion training program through support of faculty training in abortion and ultrasound, as well as dedicated faculty time for curriculum development and implementation.

Fogarty to Accept National Mentoring Award

Colleen T. Fogarty, MD, MSc, William Rocktaschel Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Rochester, was honored with a mentoring award from the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Trust at an October 19 ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia. The award honors faculty who have “inspired their former students to achieve greatness” and make a difference in their communities.

Dr. Fogart has been an STFM member for more than 20 years.
