WORLD'S FAVOURITE PIZZA TOPPINGSTechnomic polled consumers in 25 countries to discover the world’s favourite pizza toppings and the results revealed some surprises. Chicken and ham tied for first choice of 53% of global consumers. Pepperoni was the second favourite while bacon and salami came in close behind. Although plant-based proteins did not come in as a top choice globally, the UK and Indian markets showed strong demand in this category. 2. TECHNOMIC TOP 500According to Technomic’s 2021 Restaurant Chain report, sales at the 500 largest chains in the USA generated $304 billion in sales. The 50 largest chains performed much better than everyone else due to their already heavy use of drive-thru, delivery and digital sales. Some of the big winners include Wendy’s, who’s system sales rose 4.8% thanks to their introduction of breakfast, and McDonald’s sales accounted for 13% of the overall top 500 sales. 3. NEW CHICKEN BACON BURGERSMcDonald’s has begun testing a Crispy Chicken and Bacon Breakfast sandwich at select California locations. The new offering features a chicken filet, honey sauce and applewood-smoked bacon either on an English muffin or biscuit. Shake Shack has also launched bacon as a limited-time sandwich topping on the new Avocado Bacon Burger and Avocado Bacon Chicken Sandwich. The bacon is sourced from Niman Ranch, a network of more than 700 family farmers and ranchers known for raising sustainable livestock. 4. ASDA'S LATEST ASIAN FOOD CONCEPTAsda is rejuvenating their food-to-go offering by launching Kellydeli’s Asian-inspired ‘Sticks, Bowls & Rolls’ concept in seven of their UK stores. The Kellydeli range includes skewered chicken or teriyaki tofu on sticks as well as rice bowls and boa buns with chicken, pork and prawns. The to-go dishes can be heated or served cold. The new range satisfies the consumer’s need for healthy, adventurous and convenient food offerings. 5. FOOD TO GO EXPECTED TO GROWThe food to go market is expected to reach over £15 billion this year and growing to over £22 billion by 2024, according to the Lumina Intelligence UK Food To Go Market Report. This category is well-placed as restrictions are curtailed with 21% of consumers reporting they are likely to purchase food to go products for outdoor eating. Sandwich, bakery and café segments are expected to lead the surge in sales. 6. SIX FOOD TRENDS FOR SUMMERConsumers are feeling optimistic for the summer as restrictions begin to ease. There are 6 key trends which are expected to be hot this summer. From picnic-ready meals to adventurous breakfast options, people are craving experiences and something different. Quality meats, veggies foods, healthy options and eco credentials are also expected to trend as consumer seek healthy yet indulgent treats this summer for less guilt. 7. PIZZA GUYS' STREET TACO FLATBREADPizza Guys have created a unique combination of a taco and pizza with their new Street Taco Flatbread. It is made with taco sauce, grilled chicken pieces, mozzarella and pico de gallo with the optional sides of lime and hot sauces. This offering joins Pizza Guys’ current flatbread range including Fiery Pepperoni Bacon, Creamy Pesto Artichoke, and Grilled Chicken Spinach. 8. RESTAURANTS RETAIN TAKEAWAY SALESAs restaurants begin to reopen dine-in services in the U.S., many chains have noticed that the takeaway business they generated during the pandemic has not vanished. While most operators consider this to be a temporary phenomenon, this gives operators confidence that digital sales will continue even after indoor capacity improves. 9. LA FOODS VIRTUAL WORKSHOPSLA Foods, an American street food wholesaler based in the Netherlands, is offering virtual kitchen workshops to showcase various concepts using their products as the food service industry begins to reopen. Customers can order a Tasting Box to make some of the dishes on their own or prepare live with LA Foods chefs.
