Hello Fish Fan,Welcome to the fifth edition of Fishy News, the newsletter of the Which Fish? campaign providing facts about species, recipes, updates on participants' activities, news about the campaign, ideas to raise awareness of the campaign and more. In other words, everything you need to run this campaign... at your zoo or aquarium! Make sure you also follow us on Facebook to stay up-to-date between two editions. PARTICIPANTS' ACTIVITIES In 2021 Punta Verde Zoo (Italy) will organize family card game tournaments in collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics. To increase awareness on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) and create an impact lasting beyond the end of the project, FAIRSEA, an Interreg project, developed Fish ’n Ships, a card game reproducing the Adriatic and Mediterranean marine food web and fisheries complexity. The concept of the game is similar to the integrated science-based platform developed in FAIRSEA as a support tool for fisheries management. It reflects the complexity of species, fisheries, environmental variabilities and socio-economic pressures. Fish ‘n Ships targets young generations (> 8 years) but is appealing at any age. It is developed to explain the variety of marine species, their different roles in the food web, the complexity of fishing gears with their targets and their discards. As in real life, unforeseen events (bonus and malus) can affect positively or negatively the marine ecosystem of players, making fishing more or less difficult. Each player can choose their own strategy, like fishermen do, but chances of winning are higher for those that balance best the conservation of ecological components of the sea with a sustainable exploitation. Exactly the objective we would like to reach for the Adriatic Sea and other seas worldwide and that is still too rarely applied. What a brilliant activity! Three hundred copies per language (Italian English, Croatian) were printed and distributed for free to schools, educational/cultural organizations and associations. If your institution is interested in the game, please contact the OGS team at urp@inogs.it with the subject "Request of the FAIRSEA communication tool Fish n' Ships". REMINDERAs part of the campaign, all participants made commitments to take action to improve the sustainability of marine and aquatic resources used at their institution, and to inform the public about the campaign. It's been a challenging year, and we would like to know how everyone is getting on so far. Please click here to complete our first year campaign survey. The survey will take around 15-20 minutes to complete, depending on your answers, and will be open until 31 March. Thanks in advance for your time. SUSTAINABLE FEED VIEWED BY...Rotterdam Zoo, Which Fish campaign's participantSander van Lopik, aquarist at Rotterdam Zoo, shared his view on the importance for the industry to work on a certification of fish meal including products in all animal feeds as soon as possible. Not only for zoos and aquariums but also for pet owners because everyone should be able to make a sustainable choice. © OECD/FAO (2020) WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT...the European squid? The squid industry is an increasing market, dominated by Spain, Japan, and China. EVENTAt the end of January, Attica Zoo hosted the annual GAIA (Global Awareness Investigation & Action) Greece Youth Symposium – an international programme for 12-18 year old students to exchange knowledge on environmental research and good practices. Students, educators, scientists and other professionals from all over the world shared their work online. A lot of different topics were discussed but one caught our attention more intensely. Gabriella Dallas, a Youth Service Learning Program student at the zoo, presented “The Albatross and the Fisherman”, the story she created in support of our campaign and aiming at influencing consumers to choose sustainably sourced fish and help protect the oceans. How inspiring! View the video below and visit the resource page to download the PDF and Powerpoint versions. You can check the rest of the student-led projects here: http://bit.ly/GAIA2021. If your education department is interested in joining the GAIA network, please contact Dr Georgina Spyres, Head of Education and Research at Attica Zoo and GAIA Greece Director. © Attica Zoo WHAT'S NEW?Please send your creations and activities to Sandrine Camus if you want to be promoted on the Which Fish? website or Facebook page.
