Welcome to our June newsletter

Welcome to the June edition of our newsletter.

Last month was very exciting as we launched round one of our National Open Call for Research. Below, you will find more about that, along with some exciting updates from the team.

Just this week, AFWI HQ welcomed teams from the preferred Research Centres, including Professor Patrick Baker from Melbourne University, Professor Mark Brown, and Kelly Stewart from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

They visited HQ and the location of the Launceston Research Centre along with the AFWI team and the interim Launceston Research Centre Lead, Gregory Nolan.

We can't wait to update you more on the Research Centres as those discussions continue.

We hope you are enjoying the AFWI updates delivered straight to your inbox. If you think a colleague or friend might appreciate them, too, please share so they can subscribe.

National Open Call for Research update

We officially launched our National Open Call last month and have been thrilled with the response from researchers and industry.

The team held an online information session for potential applicants that covered the application process, eligibility and key research themes that the Open Call will focus on.

Thank you to everyone who attended and took part in a great Q&A session at the end.

If you missed it, don't worry, you can watch the recording here.

We've also added some handy FAQs to help with any tricky questions you might have, but don't forget you can always email the team at: Grants.AFWI@utas.edu.au if you need any assistance or guidance.

Don't forget project applications close on Friday, 12 July 2024, 5pm AEST.

AFWI on the road

We enjoy getting out, meeting the community, and engaging with our stakeholders.

Recently, AFWI visited Casino in NSW for Primex Field Days.

Professor Mark Brown from our University of the Sunshine Coast Research Centre presented at the Primex Forestry & Timber Hub.

Mark has also visited the Timber Hubs across Australia to give them an overview of AFWI and our main research themes.

Thank you, Mark, for representing AFWI in NSW and across Australia.

AFWI goes international

This month, Dr. Patrick Mitchell, our Deputy Director, and Maeve McKenna, our Communications and Engagement Manager, are excited to represent AFWI at the IUFRO World Congress 2024 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Themed 'Forests and Society,' the conference will be held from June 23-29, bringing together researchers, policymakers, forest managers, and industry representatives.

Attendees will share the latest scientific knowledge and innovations in forest research through plenary sessions, technical presentations, workshops, symposia, and field trips.

The event will address critical global challenges like climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable forest management.

Patrick and Maeve will be showcasing AFWI at the exhibition. If you're attending, please drop by and say hi!
