1. EFSA: avian influenza spreading rapidly through wild birds in Europe

The risk of avian influenza moving into previously unaffected European countries is high, according to a publication today by EFSA which shows that the virus is spreading rapidly across the continent. The virus has also caused more flocks to be culled in Japan.

2. Beef and pork sold in UK contain low levels of antimicrobial resistant bacteria E. coli

A study carried out between January and December 2019 by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) shows levels of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) E. coli in fresh beef and pork remain low.

3. Almost 40 people now sick in mysterious O157 outbreak

39 people are sick in one of three mystery E. coli O157:H7outbreaks currently under investigation by federal agencies, with leafy greens under particular scrutiny. The outbreak span 18 states.

4. Norway surveillance finds E. coli in raw milk products

A survey by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) finds unpasteurised products have a lower microbiological quality than pasteurised, with some “challenges” with pathogens in raw milk products from the EU and Norway, including the presence of STEC in some samples.
