ISSM Issues Educational Leaflets on Testosterone Deficiency in Men

We're pleased to announce the release of two leaflets that answer important questions about male testosterone deficiency (TD).

The first, a quick reference guide for professionals, covers the basics of TD and explains how TD is diagnosed, treated, and monitored.

The second, a patient information sheet, addresses common concerns about TD, including symptoms, diagnosis, causes, and treatment.  It also discusses the health implications of TD, the possible side effects of treatment, and the use of natural remedies.

Both leaflets are available for download on the ISSM's Clinical Guidelines web page

Testosterone Therapy Does Not Worsen Atherosclerosis in Older Men, Study Says

Testosterone therapy in older men does not promote the progression of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), according to research published last month in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Also, sexual function and quality of life do not appear to improve with testosterone therapy in this population, the study reported.

The project was led by Shalender Bhasin of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Three hundred eight men with a mean age of 68 years participated. The participants had low or low-normal testosterone levels.

About half the men were assigned to receive a daily dose of testosterone gel. The remainder used a placebo gel. This protocol lasted for three years.

Upon evaluation, the researchers found no differences between the two groups in atherosclerosis progression, sexual function, and health-related quality of life.

The authors noted that this study was not meant to assess testosterone therapy and cardiovascular safety.
