Council services over ChristmasCouncil offices and Cairns Libraries branches will be closed from 5pm on Friday 23 December, reopening on Tuesday 3 January 2017. Council's customer service call centre will be open with a reduced staff from 28 to 30 December. An after-hours call centre is available at all other times for urgent matters on the usual customer service number 4044 3044. Ticketlink will operate on reduced hours from the Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre. Full details regarding operation of Council facilities during the holiday period is available on our website. Bin collections unchangedKerbside waste collections will continue as normal across the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Please put both green and yellow lid bins out as per the usual schedule, including all public holidays. Council's waste transfer stations will be open every day except Christmas Day. Ebenezer Scrooge hates Christmas and thinks it is a ridiculous occasion, especially when it’s stinking hot! Three games will be played at Barlow Park in October and November, two of which will form a massive double header on 29 October. Tickets are now on sale and a special Christmas gift card can be downloaded from the official Rugby League World Cup website. Concert to ring in new yearCairns is once again set to finish the year on a high note, with a massive free, outdoor concert to ring in 2017. Melbourne indi-soul band Saskwatch will headline a full evening of live music entertainment at Fogarty Park. They'll be supported by Atherton-born singer-songwriter-guitarist Ray Danes and popular local bands Sanchez, Drewboy and the Sax Addicts and The Taste in a six-hour program to ring in the new year. For the kids, a Mad Hatter’s Party will include an interactive family fun show, magic show and juggling workshop. There will also be free rides, on-stage entertainment, face painting, roving characters and arts and crafts activities. There will be two fireworks displays - at 9am and midnight. A free bus service will help revellers get home safely. Buses will depart Lake Street between 12.30am and 2.30am. Commonwealth Games countdownAn oversized surfboard on the Cairns Esplanade is counting down the days, hours and minutes until the start of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Though the host city is the Gold Coast, Cairns will be part of the action as an official event city. Preliminary rounds of the basketball will be played at the Cairns Convention Centre in April 2018 and there will be community events to celebrate the Games. Official GC2018 mascot Borobi made the trip up for the unveiling of the surfboard countdown clock last weekend. He's pictured with Cr Terry James, Cr Linda Cooper, Mayor Bob Manning and Cr Cathy Zeiger. Shine a spotlight on unsung heroesNominations have been extended until Friday 23 December for the 2017 Cairns Region Australia Day Awards. If you know someone who inspires you, either through their own achievements or their contribution to the community, you can nominate them for one of seven awards. There are categories for outstanding achievement in sport and the arts, as well as a volunteering award and the prestigious Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year. Nominations can be submitted online. Water restrictionsLevel 1 water restrictions remain in place for the entire Cairns Regional Council area. As well as reduced sprinkler use times, restrictions apply to hosing of paved areas, topping up of swimming pools, ponds and tanks, washing vehicles and operation of fountains.
