Click here Newsletter May 2019 HEADLINESChris Law MP says Scotland can be leader on ClimateOn the same day that the Scottish Government announced amendments to the Climate Change Bill that aims to set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, Chris Law MP met Alliance members for the second time to share views and inform his work as the SNP’s Westminster International Development and Climate Justice Spokesperson. Chris, like many of our members, said he is committed to making sure climate justice arguments are kept front and centre in the debates on climate policy going forward. Welcoming the Scottish Government’s announcement to adopt the advice of the UK Climate Change Committee, Chris said he would continue to push the UK Government to adopt a more coherent approach to climate through its aid budget. Referencing the International Development Committee’s upcoming report on Climate, Chris also said he was shocked to learn that DFID’s work overseas lack’s coherence on this issue. Rory Stewart appointed new Secretary of State for International DevelopmentOn 1st May 2019, following a cabinet reshuffle, Rory Stewart OBE MP, was announced as the new Secretary of State for International Development. He replaces the Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP who has moved to the Ministry of Defense. In a letter to the new Secretary of State, Alliance CEO Jane Salmonson welcomed Mr Stewart to his new role and invited him to Scotland to meet with Alliance members at his earliest convenience. Jane said: "Here at the Alliance, we welcome Rory Stewart's appointment and look forward to working with him. His strong support for International development is clear and the Department for International Development will be strengthened with his leadership." 2019 Alliance Photo Competition now launched!We are delighted to announce the return of the Alliance Photo Competition and to invite entries for this year’s theme ‘Sustainable development through the lens of gender’. The top entries will be displayed at our Annual Conference on the 25th September 2019 which takes the issue of gender justice as its overarching theme. A prize will be awarded to the winning entry.
