In Focus, 24 April 2014

Dear reader, welcome to the latest edition of In Focus, full of news, events and opportunities from your council.

Mayor's Message

Tomorrow morning, I - along with many others - will rise early to commemorate the 99th anniversary of the ANZACs landing at Gallipoli.

Anzac Day is our most sacred day and it is my honour as Mayor to lay a wreath at the Cairns Dawn Service on behalf of the city in honour of those who gave their lives.

This week, I had the opportunity to meet with a World War II veteran by the name of George Camp. He was one of five brothers who served in that conflict. Unlike so many others, all five returned home and had the opportunity to share their experiences.

George is now 93 years of age and his role in our nation's history has been captured in an informative display adjacent to the Cairns Cenotaph.

I hope you will join with me in acknowledging the importance of Anzac Day at one of the many services to be held throughout the Cairns region.

Mayor Bob Manning

Shop in Lake St to win

Get Lucky on Lake logo

Council's Get Lucky on Lake competition - with a prize pool of $80,000 - offers shoppers a chance to win a new Holden Cruze, luxury getaways and thousands of dollars to spend in the Lake Street area.

The competition supports city traders while work is underway to redevelop Lake Street.

Of the $80,000 in prizes up for grabs, $38,000 will be injected directly back into affected traders in the Lake Street precinct through shopping vouchers to be spent at participating businesses.

More than 100 businesses in Lake Street, Shields Street , Main Street Arcade, Oceana Walk, Retail Arcade and Orchid Plaza are taking part.

Simply spend more than $10 at any of the participating businesses to receive an entry into the competition. For each $10 spent, you will receive an entry form - so the more you spend, the more chances you have to win!

Get Lucky on Lake will run until 29 August 2014 with daily and monthly prize winners. It culminates in the grand opening of Lake Street on 6 September 2014 when the winners of the $50,000 grand prize pool will be announced. Winners are announced each day in The Cairns Post and on Council's Facebook page.

Cairns in tourism spotlight

In just over two weeks’ time, the focus of the world’s tourism industry will be on Cairns.

The Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) is the southern hemisphere’s largest tourism industry gathering and plays and sets the tone for global marketing of Australia’s regions for the next 12 months.

Mayor Bob Manning said Cairns would be looking its best for the influx of up to 1800 ATE14 delegates, comprising 1200 Australian Sellers and 600 international buyers from 38 countries, plus about 80 international and Australian media.

“Council staff are working hard to have our city looking spic and span,” Cr Manning said.

“We’ve literally been cleaning up the streets with pressure cleaners and spending extra time tidying gardens. We want Cairns to be looking its postcard-perfect best when the delegates and accompanying travel writers roll into town.”

During the past week, Council has removed power poles and bollards to make way for a 4000 square metre temporary pavilion that will form an extension to the Convention Centre. As a result of this structure, Little Grafton Street will be closed to all traffic from this Saturday 26 April.

The ATE runs from 11 to 15 May, though many delegates are expected to arrive earlier to get a taste of the region.

“We’re hoping that residents will play their part in making our visitors feel welcome,” Cr Manning said. “A smile and a friendly ‘hello’ goes a long way in any language. We also hope that businesses might chime in with some welcoming window displays.”

Community movie night

People watching movie outside

As a big thank you for the community support for the Australian Tourism Exchange, everyone is invited to relax on the Cairns Esplanade with a free outdoor movie screening under the palm trees on the Western Events Lawn on May 14.

Between 5pm and 6.30pm Juanita Soper from Sea FM will host the awarding of prizes for the Wet Tropics Colouring Competition, the Sea FM Live Like A Tourist competition and The Cairns Post Your Place in Paradise competition.

The winners will get to sit in a special “Gold Grass” section with bean bags for the screening of Despicable Me 2 at 6.30pm. The entertainment includes roving entertainers, face painters and a barbecue and will end with a fireworks display at 8pm.

Have your say on new path

Family riding bikes

Plans for a new pathway connecting Brinsmead through to Redlynch Valley and providing safe access for children cycling to two schools have been released for public comment.

The 5km pathway is the next implementation stage in the Cairns Cycling and Walking Strategy and is jointly funded under the Active Cairns initiative by Council and the Queensland Government.

The proposed route would provide a safer option for children travelling to schools in the immediate area.

Public comment will be accepted until 2 May. Pending the results of the consultation, Council intends to start construction soon after. Visit the Your Say website to get involved.

Capturing war history

Cairns' war history has been presented in a series of interpretive panels installed adjacent to the Cairns Cenotaph on the Esplanade in time for Anzac Day.

The project was a product of the Cairns War Memorial Conservation Management Plan adopted by Council in 2012.

The new panels depict Cairns' experience of World War II, from the sound of the Catalina flying boats to the influx of Australian and American troops utilising homes, shops and sheds as a base for their operations.

Council worked closely with the Cairns RSL Sub-Branch in creating the commemorative displays.

Mayor Bob Manning is pictured above with Phil Warwick from the Cairns RSL Sub-Branch and World War II veteran George Camp, whose photo as a young man features on the panel behind them.
