In just over two weeks’ time, the focus of the world’s tourism industry will be on Cairns.
The Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) is the southern hemisphere’s largest tourism industry gathering and plays and sets the tone for global marketing of Australia’s regions for the next 12 months.
Mayor Bob Manning said Cairns would be looking its best for the influx of up to 1800 ATE14 delegates, comprising 1200 Australian Sellers and 600 international buyers from 38 countries, plus about 80 international and Australian media.
“Council staff are working hard to have our city looking spic and span,” Cr Manning said.
“We’ve literally been cleaning up the streets with pressure cleaners and spending extra time tidying gardens. We want Cairns to be looking its postcard-perfect best when the delegates and accompanying travel writers roll into town.”
During the past week, Council has removed power poles and bollards to make way for a 4000 square metre temporary pavilion that will form an extension to the Convention Centre. As a result of this structure, Little Grafton Street will be closed to all traffic from this Saturday 26 April.
The ATE runs from 11 to 15 May, though many delegates are expected to arrive earlier to get a taste of the region.
“We’re hoping that residents will play their part in making our visitors feel welcome,” Cr Manning said. “A smile and a friendly ‘hello’ goes a long way in any language. We also hope that businesses might chime in with some welcoming window displays.”
