A new calculator has been developed by the University of Exeter to help clinicians classify whether someone has type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The calculator uses a model that takes into account available data as well as blood test results. It can be used to identify if a person is likely to have type 1 diabetes to reduce misdiagnosis. Practical advice for cardiologists on prescribing two new classes of type 2 diabetes medication has been published. Cardiovascular benefits have been demonstrated in adults with type 2 diabetes by sodium glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) in recent results from large-scale studies. Diabetes teams in English and Welsh hospitals have submitted data for the 2019 National Diabetes Audit. The National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) measures the quality of diabetes care provided to people with diabetes while they are admitted to hospital whatever the cause, and aims to support quality improvement. Preventing inpatients with diabetes from developing hypoglycaemia could dramatically reduce the length of time they spend in hospital, according to a review of several international studies. A team from the University of East Anglia and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reviewed 15 international studies, comparing outcomes for people with diabetes who were exposed to hypoglycaemia in hospital with those with diabetes who were not. The results of the recent NHS England audit into diabetes specialist nursing will be revealed at a major conference for healthcare professionals. TREND-UK an organisation that represents all diabetes nursing groups, launched the DSN Audit because the current number of diabetes specialist nurses (DSNs) is unclear. This audit was initiated in response to a challenge posed at the All Party Parliamentary Diabetes Group. Staff at Medway NHS Foundation Trust have come together to film a parody version of the Village People’s ‘YMCA’ to raise awareness for Hypo Awareness Week.
