SUBWAY RECRUITS KEY PLAYERSSubway has launched a media campaign featuring television commercials as well as social and digital content with five well known sports figures to promote its new Eat Fresh Refresh menu launch. The ads are narrated by basketball great-turned-sports-analyst Charles Barkley and features two-time National Basketball Association MVP Stephen Curry, 7-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady, tennis champion Venus Williams and soccer great, Megan Rapinoe. 2. IS THE MCSPICY HOT ENOUGH FOR YOUMcDonald’s UK and Ireland has launched a limited-edition hot new sandwich called the McSpicy. The sandwich features a spicy-breaded chicken fillet, crunchy lettuce and cool mayo inside a sesame seed bun. All orders via the McDonald’s app come with a free bottle of Happy Meal milk to help cool things down. The brand is promoting the sandwich through a #McSpicyDebate to hear how spicy it is for consumers with a custom emoji, Snapchat lens and GIFs created. 3. NYP MEXICAN-INSPIRED PIZZASNew York Pizza in the Netherlands has launched two new Mexican-inspired pizzas. The range includes a Tex Mex Beef and Mexican Chicken & Hot Veggie Nachos pizza. The Tex Mex Beef is seasoned with taco seasoning and topped with salsa while the Tex Mex Chicken & Hot Veggie Nachos is topped with fajita chicken strips, jalapeños, bell peppers and chipotle sauce. In addition, NYP are offering Loaded Nachos with beef and chicken topping options. 4. CHANGES TO BRITAIN'S BBQ HABITSWhen it comes to BBQ, meat is still king in Britain. According to Eat Great Meat’s Google Trends data, meat indulgence is forecast to be high throughout this summer. Steak, brisket and burgers feature at the top of the most-searched-for foods list. Experts predict many consumers may opt to stay in the safety of their backyard over going out and found that younger adults have become more engaged in barbecues than years past. 5. LITTLE CAESAR'S PLANTERONIPlant-based continues to expand its reach in foodservice with Little Caesars launching Planteroni, a plant-based pepperoni, on its pizzas in six major U.S. cities. The move comes after a deal between Little Caesars and Field Roast, a vegetarian-friendly line of burgers, hot dogs, deli meat, cheese and other products. The Planteroni topping is made with pea protein and spices like fennel, pepper, garlic and paprika. Little Caesars’ research shows that almost 70% of consumers would order plant-based meat if given the opportunity. KFC MOVES TOWARDS ZERO CARBONKFC UK and Ireland has announced plans to develop “zero-carbon” restaurants by 2040 as part of the company’s updated climate action strategy. The brand has teamed up with the University of Liverpool’s Zero Carbon Research Institute to plan working restaurant models with no carbon impact. KFC has also become a founding member of the Zero Carbon Forum’s new coalition of hospitality businesses and signed up to the British Retail Consortium’s Net-zero Roadmap. 7. SIZZLING SUMMER SANDWICHESAmerican burger chain, Red Robin, is turning up the heat with their Scorpion Gourmet Burger and Scorpion Wings, both made with a new spicy Scorpion Pepper Sauce. The fiery new burger features a fire-grilled beef burger topped with Pepper-Jack cheese, fried jalapeños, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, red onions, roasted garlic aioli and the Scorpion Pepper Sauce. For another sizzling summer offering in the U.S., Quiznos has introduced their Smilin’ Pig smoked pork BBQ sandwich. The new launch features smoked pork loin, bacon, ham, red onion, melted cheddar cheese, pickles and a tangy Blue-Ribbon BBQ sauce on toasted bread. 8. ENDLESS CHICKEN INNOVATIONChicken is the protein of choice for menu innovation in the U.S. with key flavour trends such as hot honey, lemon pepper and honey maple popping up in recent launches from Shake Shack, Roy Rogers and Round Table Pizza. Plant-based is not to be forgotten with Veggie Grill launching a new Crispy Buffalo Chickin’ sandwich featuring a crispy plant-based patty topped with ranch, Buffalo sauce, pickles, lettuce and tomato on a brioche bun. 9.
