Dear members, colleagues, and supporters of the Centre, This is NAIDOC week and we, together, celebrate the First Nations people who have shared and nurtured this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC week is a fitting week to officially launch the Freemasons Centre for Male Health and Wellbeing - Northern Territory Division based at the Menzies School of Health Research. FCMHW is an alliance of organisations across South Australia and the Northern Territory that collaborate and jointly invest in trans-disciplinary research, the outcomes which informs policy and practice to advance the health and wellbeing of males, and by extension their families and communities. The research alliance currently involves Masonic Charities, Menzies School of Health Research (Menzies), the University of Adelaide, Flinders University in conjunction with the Flinders Foundation, and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. Menzies will lead the NT Division with a research program that focuses on Indigenous male health, boys and young men’s health, fathering and fatherhood, social and emotional wellbeing, and equity and action on the social determinants of health. The programs and expertise of the SA and NT Divisions complement and extend the capacity of the Centre which will translate into impact. FCMHW is an initiative of Masonic Charities, the charitable arm of Freemasons SA/NT. Masonic Charities is donating major funding over the next three years, matched by its research alliance partners. Please join us via Zoom for the launch. We look forward to sharing with you information about the NT Division research team and programs in the first FCMHW e-newsletter. A Masonic Charities initiativeWhat NAIDOC week means to me and why it is important to all Australians. "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists of this nation which significantly bonds us to the spiritually and cultural connection to this country. I think the importance of NAIDOC week should be celebrated every day in this way. I do however see the great joy and pride that NAIDOC week brings to our First Nations people when we get to see all our family and elders together to celebrate each other’s different tribes and cultures. From saltwater people to freshwater people, to Indigenous people to non-Indigenous people, it brings us all closer together to celebrate this beautiful country that we all share and live together on to build a bigger and brighter future for many generations to come" Jahdai Vigona, Indigenous Trainee.
