July 2021 News HEADLINESOur new climate online exibition goes live! This month's Alliance News comes later than normal, as we've been busy developing something new to share with you... We are excited to introduce our new online digital exhibition, Facing the Crisis, exploring the impacts of the climate crisis across the globe. Across more than 50 films and images, discover personal stories, challenges and responses to the climate crisis in countries across the “Global South” through the lens of photography and film. Each image tells its own story of the human costs and resilience of people around the world. Please take your time, share images using #FacingTheCrisis, and enjoy! You can still be part of Facing the Crisis! Our logic is simple: the more visual stories we can share, the stronger our collective message on climate justice can be ahead of COP26. That's why we've included an easy-to-use online submission form, so everyone has the chance to be part of this exciting exhibition ahead of its public launch event in the autumn. You don't have to be a professional photographer or filmographer either. All that’s important is that your photo or short film tells a story of climate impacts or responses across the world. So what are you waiting for?! MPs vote to reduce UK Aid budget could last for yearsOn 13 July 2021, MPs voted to reduce the UK Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget from 0.7% to 0.5% of GNI, potentially impacting millions around the world for years to come. Despite a rebellion from 25 Tory backbenchers, including ex-Prime Minister Theresa May, the Government won the vote in favour of the Treasury statement that introduced rules for a retrun to 0.7%. Particularly dissappointing from an Alliance perpsective is that all Scottish Conservative MPs voted with the Government, depsite strong support in Scotland for development spending as we found in our recent polling. EXHIBITION SPOTLIGHTFrom Vicious Circle to Circle of LifeAlliance member and small Scottish charity, Thrive, submitted one the winning films to our 2021 competition which now forms part of our Facing The Crisis exhibition. We hear from Dr Cathy Ratcliff, one of four Directors at Thrive, about why their winning film attempts to bypass neo-colonial development discourse. Want to write a blog or opinion piece for us?
