Webversion COMPETENCE IN PAPER NewsletterNovember 2020 From the officeDear members and friends of ZELLCHEMING, The increasing use of digital formats is one of the elements that serve to make the association fit for the future. In addition, virtual meetings are usually the only way to meet in a larger group and exchange information in an uncomplicated way in the times of Covid-19. Thus, the ZELLCHEMING Executive Board met for a virtual meeting on October 14. The agenda included the strategic reorientation of the main committee and its technical committees and district groups. In future, the district groups are to be divided into four regions (North, East, South and West). In most cases, the events will take place together with the district groups of VPM Munich. In the coming weeks, the further procedure will be discussed in one-on-one meetings - and as soon as the next steps are outlined, they will be described in our newsletter. More information will also be available in November at the virtual district group meeting. Virtual district group meeting - Save the date!Under the direction of Michael Köhler, head of the ZELLCHEMING District Group North, a virtual district group conference with a lecture program will be organized. The event is scheduled for November 26, 2020 from 3 to 5 pm. In addition to the presentation of the new district group structure and the changes at ZELLCHEMING, the preliminary program includes a keynote lecture by Dr. Christoph Persin (Head of Energy & Environment, Association of German Paper Mills - VDP) on the current situation of the Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD), the EU directive on the handling of disposable plastic articles and its significance for the paper industry. In addition, Sebastian Porkert (P-Paper, deputy chairman of the ZELLCHEMING District Group Bavaria) will give a lecture on the topic "Microplastics and possible origins in the paper industry". The meeting will be rounded off with a discussion and the opportunity to exchange ideas in virtual meet & greet forums. If you would like to participate in the event, please contact the office. The registration deadline is November 19, 2020. The number of participants is limited. ZELLCHEMING Elevator Pitch
The idea for the Elevator Pitch originated in the USA: Sales people formulated the goal of convincing customers and bosses of their idea during an elevator ride. As this rarely lasted longer than 60 seconds, all relevant information had to fit into this time window: The brief presentation should arouse enthusiasm for a project, land the order or convince the busy boss. The concept quickly caught on, so the elevator pitch became a familiar word and is still used today. However, the short presentation is now rarely given in an elevator, but is used to convince the interviewee of an idea and whet his appetite for more. We hope that you will use our Elevator Pitch now when you report on the association and its work! From Society & IndustryEssity will produce tissue from wheat straw in its Mannheim mill
According to the company, a new production facility for pulp production will be built on the Mannheim site by mid 2021. It is a groundbreaking pilot project; the new production facility will implement what has so far only been achieved in a test laboratory, according to a statement. The biggest challenge in designing the plant: completely new paths had been taken and therefore neither existing knowledge nor existing systems and their components could be used. Essity's new straw pulp production facility will cover an area of 8,000 m² in several buildings. The company has converted a former spare parts warehouse where the straw is cleaned and freed of impurities. It is then broken down into its components and transported to the bleaching tower. From there the pulp is pumped directly to the paper machine. According to the company, a new 10,000 m² straw storage area complements the investment. The raw material has excellent properties in terms of strength, softness and absorbency and will further improve the quality of the company's own hygiene products, says Essity. The products made from straw pulp are expected to be launched in the second half of 2021. Smurfit Kappa founds Recycling Dual GmbH
This may also have an impact on the end consumer. Smurfit Kappa, Europe's leading packaging and paper manufacturer and recycler, has reacted to this and founded Recycling Dual GmbH, which will ensure the nationwide take-back of household packaging and offer the licensing of packaging requiring system participation for the obligated manufacturers and/or distributors/importers. The customers of Recycling Dual have a double advantage: lower costs and more sustainability. With the founding of "Recycling Dual GmbH", the packaging group will be the only company on the market that will be able to map the complete life cycle of PPK sales packaging from 2021 onwards - from paper and packaging development to licensing, collection and final recycling. The particular added value for customers lies in the possibility of optimizing packaging along the entire value chain, while at the same time reducing the use of resources and the associated licensing costs right from the development process. In addition, the company is able to offer reduced licensing costs within the framework of partnerships and the existing logistics networks of the in-house paper mills, thus providing attractive complete solutions from a single source. Smurfit Kappa also plans to integrate this solution in its own online store, the new Smurfit Kappa eShop. In future, customers will be able to license their sales packaging while shopping online, thus avoiding further workloads. From the membershipStarting signal for the European Pulp and Paper Tour in MannheimOn October 5, 2020, the truck for the ABB Paper and Pulp Tour Europe was inaugurated in Mannheim. ZELLCHEMING Chairman Gerrit Lund (3rd from left) was able to get first-hand information about ABB's extensive program for the pulp and paper industry. Soon this truck will be on its way to customers in Europe to present ABB's system solutions to the employees in the pulp and paper mills. At present, the option is being examined of setting up the truck at the RMCC Wiesbaden exhibition center on the occasion of the upcoming ZELLCHEMING-Expo, from June 9 to 10, 2021. We hope to see you again soon in Wiesbaden and wish the ABB team every success with this innovative concept! From the Technical CommitteesThe technical committee Pulp and Paper Testing (DATA) held a virtual meeting on 29 September 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
