STFM Announces 2018 Slate of Candidates for the Board of Directors

Candidates have provided personal histories, position statements, answers to select questions, and short video speeches to give STFM members a glimpse into the contributions they can make to STFM.


Eligible voters will receive an email with information about how to vote for the slate of candidates on February 12. Voting will close on February 26. The new members of the Board of Directors will be announced in the February 28 STFM Messenger and on the STFM website.

Residents Receive Faculty for Tomorrow Scholarships

Residents were chosen for the Faculty for Tomorrow Scholarship based on essays they wrote about their interest in teaching family medicine. The scholarships, supported by the American Board of Family Medicine Foundation and the STFM Foundation, help cover travel and accomodation expenses for residents to attend the full-day Faculty for Tomorrow Workshop at the 2018 STFM Annual Spring Conference in Washington, DC. The workshop is free to all residents who are interested in teaching in academia or clinical practice.

Two Residents Receive Training Award for Substance Use Disorders Treatment Disorders

Family medicine residents Stephanie Constantino, MD, and Alchel Nateras, MD, from Family Health Centers of San Diego Family Medicine Residency Program were chosen to receive the 2018 STFM/NIDA Training Award in Substance Use Disorders Treatment Dissemination.

Jeanne Wigant, MD, Wins the STFM Learners Blog Competition

"The Road to Family Medicine" by Jeanne Wigant, MD, received the top prize in STFM's Learners Blog Competition. The competition sought blog posts that told stories of a person or experiene that inspired authors to become family physicians. Dr Wigant received a $300 gift card.


The other two blog finalists were: "Why I Chose Family Medicine" by Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH, and "Mr Claus and My Journey to Family Medicine" by Anna Balabanova, MD.

EDUCATION COLUMN
Integrating an Interdisciplinary Hepatitis C Virus Curriculum Into a Family Medicine Residency

This interdisciplinary HCV curriculum allows physicians and pharmacists to collaborate and provide timely and effective management to HCV patients, which has increased educational opportunities for trainees and greater access to care for patients with HCV. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this free online training is avaiable to other family medicine residency programs for incorporating into curriculum.

The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has selected Tammy Chang, MD, MPH, MS, as the 2017 James C. Puffer, MD/American Board of Family Medicine Fellow. She was one of five selected for the NAM Anniversary Fellows, a highly selective, early career leadership and policy program. Dr Chang currently serves as chair of the STFM Research Committee.

2018-2019 Behavioral Science/Family Systems Educator Fellows Announced

Nineteen family medicine faculty have been chosen for the Behavioral Science/ Family Systems Educator Fellowship class of 2018-2019. These fellows are responsible for coordinating or teaching the behavioral science/family systems curriculum at their program or department and are within their first 5 years of teaching. The fellowship is a competitive, yearlong program where fellows complete a professional development plan that builds upon the fundamentals of behavioral science education.

Submit your poetry, prose, or other short writing for the 2018 Annual Poetry and Prose Contest sponsored by the STFM Ethics and Humanities Collaborative. This year's theme is"Kairos: opportune moments that have changed your experience and/or perspective in family medicine."
